My ultimate goal is to run in the 10's
I was hoping you guys can give me some direction.
So far I have a 454 core (going to 496 with -781 heads)
Work has not been started on any drivetrain components yet and nothing is set in stone.
Rear end is a 12bolt, gears have not been selected yet.
Think it will be possible to do while keeping it street legal and pump gas(93 octane) friendly?

More than a few here do it.
Depends on what streetable means to you.
I have always driven my Nova to and from the track.
Best so far with a 498 is in my sig.
Did that on Sunday.......pump gas, Shell 92...the best we get in Orygun....
I don't use GM iron heads...but others do, with good results.
10'0 are possible, maybe even a high nine with a tail wind!

Think it will be possible to do while keeping it street legal and pump gas(93 octane) friendly?I can tell you what a good friend of mine did.On the 781 heads he did a very large amount of port work.Bowl blend,tear-droped the guide area, gasket matched and smoothed the transition 2 in. into the port. The valves where 2.19/1.88 with under-cut stems. The roller cam was .630/.630,duration at .050 was 248/253 110 L/S,Victor intake, flowed 850 Holley,10.25 to 1 JE pistons,he ran a 4.56 gear and a 5,000 stall.I don't remember his tire size.I think it is a ladder bar car with min-tubs.This combo. put him right at 10.97 if I remember everything..

My 505 is .100 over instead of .060 over and has run 10.87 and there's more in it had it dead hooked, maybe 10.7x. I have 10.5-1, 781's with intake ports opened up 2.25/1.88's doesnt appear to have any exhaust port work, RPM intake, Comp XR286R on a 107lsa, 950HP, 2" tubes, 4.11 gears, but think it would have done it with 3.73's, and a tight 8" converter, flashes 46-4800 and its the reason I'm having trouble hooking right now.

Ron, what gears/trans/stall are you running? And how much weight are ya pushing?

Ron, what gears/trans/stall are you running? And how much weight are ya pushing?

I have 4.10 gears with a 10x29 Hoosier slick.
Stall is an elusive number in my mind. I foot brake and leave at 1800 to 2000 rpm. I don't have a video camera in the car to record the flash rpm.
It's a new 9" ATI set up for my car. So I honestly don't know the "numbers".
Trans is a TH400
Car weighs 3550 wih me in it.
Hope that helps!

Sreetable to me means that I can drive it to and from the track, and bomb arround town while still using 93 octane pumo gas.
Highway trips wont be happening in this car very often.
So if I understand correctly is that it is possible with good headwork bigger valves, a tight stall arround 4500 and somewhere in the range of 4:11 gears.
Aftermarket heads will be in the future for this car but as of right now are far outside my budget for this project.

I was thinking of going with the Shafiroff rotating assembly which includes je/srp pistons, hoping to get 10.2-10.5 CR.
Other than that the other variables are still up in the air.

Thanks for the suggestions this is really helping, keep em coming!

Like others have said, it depends on your definition of streetable. My chevelle ran 11.12 @ 121 with 781's. The runners are worked over, gasket matched, bigger valves. 12.65:1 (race gas), XR286R solid roller, Vic Jr. 850 Mighty Demon, 4.11 on a 28" slick, 4000 stall, 3600 lb with me in it, all the good stuff. The car ran 123 mph with a 750 Mighty Demon. Over the winter I had it on a chassis dyno a couple of times and picked up 71 hp at the wheels. So I think it would easily run in the 10's now. Took it out a couple of weeks ago to shake it down before the first T/T and spun a rod bearing, so it's in the shop. Now the question is do I put on the the Dart Pro 1 CNC 335 monsters I have in the garage and a bigger cam. Can I drive the car to work? Yes. With the 3.5" exhaust and spring pressures and race gas, I wouldn't call it much of a street car, and with 90 miles to the track, it goes on the trailer. . Good luck
