I'm not liking the stock dash on chevelle and I'm going to make a whole new dash with a center console and such. I just wanted to see if someone else has already done this, trying to get some ideas.

are you going to do steel/aluminum or fiberglass? are you going to build a console?

Im prolly going to do it out of some sheet metal or aluminum and yea I'm building a console. I'm going to keep it real simple no big humps or anything pretty much a straight forward dash with some nice bends. I plan on getting it covered aswell, also I'll be getting rid of the parking brake location and moving it to the center of the console or do it like on my 944 and put it next to the dirver's seat on the left.

I've done two out of carbon fiber, and probably will re-do it in a couple of years because i keep changing my mind about how i want it to look

I also just got a parking brake from a Boxster, and plan on building a console around it and my Tremec shifter.

looks like Covan's insert, you could probably sell that for a good bit... But I'm gonna rip the whole dash out and replace it with a one off one piece dash, maybe do a hide away switch panel.

Sounds nice, I would think twice if you dont have access to a roofers brakei fits going to be metal. I tried a metal one piece first, its quite complicated

Im glad you like my dash insert, the pics look great and it looks good from a few feet away, but im a perfectionist and will probably re-mold another one because it has too many air bubbles for me.

Iam in the process of doing an aluminum gauge panel. I made it so it just replaces the section of the sweep gauge. its pretty easy. i just used a peice of luan (1/4" plywood) then put the aluminum sheet stock over it. After deciding where you want your gauges and mark, and cut the holes for them. Glue the aluminum to the luan inset gauges and start wiring. Mine doesn't look that good yet, cause iam using an old dash that the last owner just painted, but with a new dash it should look decent. Hope this helps give you some ideas.

projekt70chevelle-
Are you looking to replace the entire dash, or just the section with the speedo and other gauges? I've seen a lot of photos of the gauges replaced with newer round gauges, many custom panels and some Covan's packages. I think you could replace just the gauge section without too much effort. Building a whole new dash sounds like a difficult job.

Uplateagain-
I like your photos of the dash with new gauges. I went the same route and replaced the sweep gauges with new ones, but I went too far and removed the entire dash to do it. It was A LOT OF WORK, but worth it because I was able to repaint the dash to freshen it up.
Your dash looks like it was painted black at some point. One suggestion- if you could paint the silver trim with some spray-can chrome I think it would look a lot better.

Malibu70, that is the coolest and most well-thought out dash i've seen yet!!!! What did you use to make the guage cluster? i.e guages etc...

Thank you for the nice compliments.

I spent a month designing the gauge panel and repainting the dash. The panel is a thin sheet of aluminum cut to fit the entire opening of the original sweep speedo. The sheet has two ears hanging down around the steering column, to use the four original speedo housing mounts above and below the opening.

The gauges are the Nordskog DP9255 digital electronic gauge package made for 80's Monte Carlo. All six electronic gauges are on one circuit board, with separate wires for each gauge. I bought the gauges from Summit Racing. The gauges came with electric oil pressure and water temp senders, but I had to order a speedo sender. One neat feature is the speedo trip meter button also brings up performance statistics of 0-60 time and 1/4 mile time.

The gauges are compact enough that I was able to cut holes for two additional round gauges, including the vacuum gauge in the picture. One thing still missing is a gear indicator.

I added high beam and parking brake indicator lights on the left side using blue and red LEDs. The red brake light is on in the picture above. The blue high-beam light is at the top above the brake light.

The black face over the whole gauge package is a clear sheet of polycarbonate plastic with 20% automotive window tint applied to the back side of the sheet. After it was completed I wished I had used darker tint, maybe 10% transmission. The flash used in this picture was bright enough to show the gauge circuitry through the tinting. On a sunny day from outside the car you cannot see any gauges in the dash, only a blank panel.

Here's what I did....not replacing the entire dash, but just where the sweep speedo goes (while retaining the factory idiot lights.)

Good replies. I'll toss in my setup one more time.

I now have a switches plate in place of the middle AC-vents.

Like UpLateAGain is finding out, the sweep dash has a curved face to is. If you use too thick of a plate that will not contour to that curve, you will need to fill in the upper-corner holes with something. No biggy because there isn't much light coming out once you get the dash pad on.
