On a 1971 Chevelle how do you replace the map light rearview mirror assembly ??? The old one wont sit up and the lense is cracked. The replacement mirror is NOS and in pristine condition and I would like to try swapping out the mirror assembly. The replacement one has the long wire and connector that plugs into the fuse panel. How should it be replaced with out cutting the wire ??? Does it take major surgery to get er done ??? The car has complete interior. Thanks...

I think the wire goes through the windlace and the A pillar cover. You are gonna have to do some searching. I put one in my car but it wasn't original so I don't know how the wire was (originally) routed. Although I can't think of many other ways to get power up there. Maybe through the headliner to the dome lamp.......if thats the case, I'd cut the wire(easier than replacing the headliner).

To get the mirror to hold up, you may just have to take it apart and squeeze the tension metal pieces that hold the rotating ball. And the lens is replacable also, you just need time and patience!!

The wire does run thru the windlace and down the left a-pillar. You must remove the plastic block from the wire connector so that it will go thru the openings on the way to the fuse block.
