I picked up a new Goodmark factory domed cowl hood with the provision for the little flapper in the back. Got it at Super Chevy in Memphis. Looks nice.
Anyway, if I can get the '70 up and running in a month or so, I would like to put this hood on. The trouble is that while the car is pretty straight, it's definitely not show-worthy. The paint, as a whole, is faded and I have a few rust bubbles in the quarters. Not bad, but bad enough. Well, I'm currently tryin to finish a budget motor to drop in. However, I REALLY want this hood on for when I drive it to work with the new motor to show off to all my buddies.
I can't justify painting it fresh Fathom Blue. It would make the rest of the car look that much more dull. I was thinking about having a friend, who is a body and paint man, scuff up that EDP coating and laying down a nice coat of Flat Black. It would stand out I suppose, but it wouldn't cost much. Throw some new hood springs on and the factory hood pin and lanyard set as well. Sound like a decent idea or am I a goofball?
Couple of questions, tho. I want to put the "Cowl Induction" trim pieces on. Are they held on with adhesive or do they snap into some holes or what? I can't remember if the hood has a provision on it for that or not. Would I be able to get the trim pieces back off for when I go to paint it the factory color, say, 3-4 years from now or would I have to buy new ones? I don't think they cost that much, but there would be no sense in buying them twice if I didn't have to.
Also, is there any way to buy the flapper assembly and rig it up to just be there, so there isn't a hole in the hood, without buying the whole kit to make it functional. I definitely want a funtional hood down the line, but ya know, just for right now...to have the look.
Oh yeah, if I did have it painted Flat Black, would it need a clearcoat for any reason? Like rust protection or what not? I am a complete newbie to paint and body if ya can't tell. graemlins/clonk.gif
Wow, I don't think I've posted in this forum in like a year! redface.gif Thanks for any advice!
