: factory cowl induction hood....should I do this....and how?

I picked up a new Goodmark factory domed cowl hood with the provision for the little flapper in the back. Got it at Super Chevy in Memphis. Looks nice.

Anyway, if I can get the '70 up and running in a month or so, I would like to put this hood on. The trouble is that while the car is pretty straight, it's definitely not show-worthy. The paint, as a whole, is faded and I have a few rust bubbles in the quarters. Not bad, but bad enough. Well, I'm currently tryin to finish a budget motor to drop in. However, I REALLY want this hood on for when I drive it to work with the new motor to show off to all my buddies.

I can't justify painting it fresh Fathom Blue. It would make the rest of the car look that much more dull. I was thinking about having a friend, who is a body and paint man, scuff up that EDP coating and laying down a nice coat of Flat Black. It would stand out I suppose, but it wouldn't cost much. Throw some new hood springs on and the factory hood pin and lanyard set as well. Sound like a decent idea or am I a goofball?

Couple of questions, tho. I want to put the "Cowl Induction" trim pieces on. Are they held on with adhesive or do they snap into some holes or what? I can't remember if the hood has a provision on it for that or not. Would I be able to get the trim pieces back off for when I go to paint it the factory color, say, 3-4 years from now or would I have to buy new ones? I don't think they cost that much, but there would be no sense in buying them twice if I didn't have to.

Also, is there any way to buy the flapper assembly and rig it up to just be there, so there isn't a hole in the hood, without buying the whole kit to make it functional. I definitely want a funtional hood down the line, but ya know, just for right now...to have the look.

Oh yeah, if I did have it painted Flat Black, would it need a clearcoat for any reason? Like rust protection or what not? I am a complete newbie to paint and body if ya can't tell. graemlins/clonk.gif

Wow, I don't think I've posted in this forum in like a year! redface.gif Thanks for any advice!

Just out of curiosity how bad is the paint faded? What about buffing it out? My .02 paint has to be applied to protect the hood, and if mine, i'd buff the car, take a sample of the paint to my supplier and have them match it, they can adjust for fading,...somewhat. Flat black+ clearcoar= gloss black.
I've seen the door and hinges in some catalogs, wouldn't be functional but could be secured up/down for the "look."

I'm holding some new "cowl induction" NOS pieces in my hand from Year One and they attach through holes in the sheetmetal and are held on with those backing nuts. Two pins are on the "cowl" emblem and three pins on the "induction" emblem.

Gloss black...yuck. Didn't think about that. Good call.

My hood has the holes, so that should be good to go for the Cowl Induction pieces.

Anyone know what all pieces have to be ordered to be able to install the flapper and secure it?

I do need to buff the paint, but I think I would rather just go for the Flat Black look than a possible mismatched fade job. That is a good idea, tho. Thanks for the tips and info guys!

You may be surprised just how close your local paint shop can match the paint. Close enough to where the average joe wouldn't even see the hood was painted later.

As far as the flapper door goes, you will need the door, Hinge set and thats it to just mount it. You can make it functional for another $75.00 or so though, the diaphram runs about $28.00, Diaphram mounting bracket was about $20.00 and the check valve about $30.00. Hood emblems aren't very expensive, and the aftermarket ones I bought came with 3M two sided tape on the back all trimmed to the shape of the emblems. Quality of the emblems was pretty good and the tape doesn't show at all once installed.
