: Welded on Fender Extensions, "Popular Hot Rodding June 2002"
feedphillipnow Jul 2nd, 04, 4:43 PM Anyone have this issue of "Popular Hod Rodding" There is a 70' Chevelle on the cover, 2 tone, the hood and top fenders are black, the rest is red. And I didnt notice until yesterday but the fender extensions are completely welded on, no seams no cracks. It looks REALLY nice, in my opionion. I have a 71, but the front end is a 70, I still need to weld little custom brackets to get them on right... and I was thinking... since i'll have the MIG out. Maybe I will do this as well. The look I think would fit my application. No handles and whatnot. Let me know, ill take a picture of this magazine cover.
or something...

feedphillipnow Jul 2nd, 04, 5:39 PM smile.gif Glad to hear a thumbs up. It's scarey when you have a full tank of gas on the MIG. Who knows what will happen! graemlins/beers.gif Im painting w/ PPG 1993 Porche Cobalt Blue, very nice color. I love this paint theme. The hood and upper fenders, fender extensions, and the upper line on the doors are painted black. I was thinking about doing something like this. Just buying a pint or whatever of black and going at it. From the get go I wanted a 2 tone of somesort, and my new hood came in a gelcoat so it was black, it looked good black. I don't want to totally rip this guys theme though, just something kind of like it :D
zefhix Jul 2nd, 04, 7:58 PM Y'know....really, get off my wavelength!! There can't be two of us with the same kindof shaving and filling going around this joint. :D
Seriously, I'm doing the same, though. Shaved eveything (including marker lamps) and filling in ALL the body lines..... :D I think it's going to look awesome!! I say go for it. If it sucks then I'll know not to do it ;) j/k

feedphillipnow Jul 2nd, 04, 9:01 PM haha, nice smile.gif we'll always have those few features to be solo! Ive done everything except I just decided to keep the rear turn signals, and the trunk lock stays. The rest is getting wiped out :D Ive seen your pics before, its looking pretty bad ass graemlins/beers.gif
zefhix Jul 3rd, 04, 1:33 AM Well, the frame is finally back under the car but I need to get the rear rebuilt before I can precisely measure offset for my rims to buy the spacers. Then the car will be back on it's own rolling stock again.... here's a quick photoshop idea of what the car will look like but my color will be darker (like a metallic charcoal) and the car will sit lower. graemlins/beers.gif

feedphillipnow Jul 3rd, 04, 2:29 PM That looks good! Not bad at all :D What wheels are those? They look like newer car type wheels. I welded and filled my passenger side fender ext. I must say I think Im going to like it very much. I'll have to at this point :D

I DONT KNOW IF THE BODYLINE WIPES OUT BETWEEN THE FENDER EXT. AND THE FENDER, BUT EITHER WAY I LIKE THE WAY IT CAME OUT.
zefhix Jul 3rd, 04, 7:19 PM They are from an '00 Camaro Z28. The car has lots of donor parts from LS1 Camaros...... ;) I definitely like the way your fender extensions came out.. graemlins/beers.gif
BowtieAaron Jul 3rd, 04, 8:19 PM the extensions are badass, im doing that to mine as well. im also shaving the handels, and frenching in the rear marker lights on the 1/4's. i might even go w/ glass bumpers, and mold the rear in, and keep the front just regular. also a frenched power antenna that looks like no antenna is there and when u turn cd player on ,it comes out of the 1/4.
its awesome to see and hear people how arnt afraid to take a chevelle and make it fully customized.

sevt_chevelle Jul 6th, 04, 12:06 AM Just excatly hwo do you plan on "molding" in those 71-72 fender exts? Those exts are potmetal and trying to weld those to a steel fender...well goodluck
BowtieAaron Jul 6th, 04, 12:14 AM ah, well i guess welding to it wouldnt be a good idear. darn it. hmm, i guess there could be other ways like fusor maybe? idk, we will see.

You might get the two metals bonded but I bet the seam will forever show due to the different expansion rates of the metals. I never knew the 70 model extensions were made of steel. The molded in look is ok but also reminds me of some poor rust repairs I've seen where all the seams are filled. Filling the seams is common on custom jobs and really helped the look of a lot of the 50's cars but IMO not needed for the 70's stuff.
