sorry ive done searches but i am still cofused. i have my 6X9's for my 70 package tray. when ilook from the trunk there is metal through the speaker holes. does this mean i have to cut out the metal part and my speakers will mount on top of my tray?

1) Lay in your trunk and with a pencil outline the speaker hole on the cardboard package tray.
2) Remove the card board package tray and cutout the hole. and reinstall tray.
3) mount the speaker grill over the hole.
4) mount the speaker in the the trunk.
The screws from the cover to the speaker will sandwich the tray in between and hold everything in place.
There will be some metal covering the face of the speaker, these cars were never ment to have too great of a sound system.
(heck most of these cars only came with AM radios  )
Never cut any metal off your car

if you are gonna run new speaker wires, it would be best to remove the seat .

I went in from the trunk and cut out the somewhat pre-made holes that are already in the metal since they are 6x9 size. For the package tray used a thin wood that we cut out to fit the area then the speaker holes. Laid a foam over it then wrapped it in black viynl and dropped some rockford 6x9's in there looks good ill send some pictures once I get a chance to get out there snap a few shots.

I am currently installing a radio and 10 CD changer in the trunk, I cound not bring myself to cut the shelf. Instead I chose to mount Stealth speakers where my rear arm rests were. It sounds great and if I ever remove it I can just order new rear panels and I will be good to go. I am also making my own dask speaker unit which is not yet done.
