: MS high build surfacer/primer

Needing a high build catalized MS primer surfacer for blocking a factory painted surface that has had filling work done. I do not have any bare metal surfaces, but need a good surface for blocking straight.
MARTINSR has recomended the MS line for this, but my local Napa store does not have the info on the correct line to use http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif.
I know they have a tintable primer, but is that the etch only? I am painting the truck with a metallic green/blue and would like a similar color for the primer (if possible)
Any part #s would be helpfull, and thanks very much in advance http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Craig, Tint/PRIME is a urethane primer and not an etch at all.

I mention NAPA Martin Senour paints mostly because I know that there are about 7200 NAPA stores in America and everyone on the board is pretty close to a store where they could get some.
If you have a NAPA store that doesn't normally deal in paint, I suggest you try other ways to get your paint/primer. NOTHING can be more of a pain in the &$$ than trying to MAKE some guy get you something he knows nothing about and could care less about. The NAPA system is kinda screwy and even when you understand it the M-S stuff is hard to get. That was one of the hardest things I had to deal with when I was a rep. You had to REALLY want to sell M-S products as a counterman to do it, it was just too much work.

So, you could use 5102 Tec/PRIME PLUS in the M-S line. It uses 5155 hardener and TS-1 thru TS-5 reducer (TS-1 being the fastest for cold weather) at a mixing ratio of 4:1+10%. So a gallon of 5102 will need a quart of 5155 and pint and an eigth or so of TS-1 thru TS-5 (TS-3 is most likely what yo need for the average temp conditions), which of course means you will need to by a quart.

What other brands do you have access to? Check your yellow pages under "Auto paint and supplies" if are not sure where the body shops in town buy.

Brian, that is exactly what I was looking for, THANK YOU. The local NAPA store wants to be helpful but the counterman is un informed about the products they carry. He did say though the store in Modesto is the "big" one that will have what I need, so a little drive is in order, or I will go back in armed with this info and place an order if they do not have it on the shelf.
The local supplier carries NASON and DuPont products. The counterman there said the NASON primers were not available as of yet due to CA regs on VOC, he said in a couple of weeks it will be here. But the DuPont is on the shelf, the part # he mentioned I do not remember right now.
I did inquire on the topcoats, and the better line he suggested would be chromabase and clear.

Craig, If you look around you might even find a shop or even a different supply house that carries Sherman Williams paint. Sherman williams is the SAME paint as M-S paint but in a different label and numbers. Ive noticed in some napa stores in Iowa some have S-W and some have M-S, but I seem to find more of the S-W paint in my area. So you might get lucky and find a place with S-W paint on hand.

If you do indeed decide on not going with a S-W or M-S paint and go with Dupont or PPG stick with their topline of products. PPG's omni sucks in my opinion, the base willnt cover, the clear dies back, and the primer is a joke. So just stay away from the lower end of the paint, its fine for a beat up driver but not for a nice looking chevelle...Eric

Craig, that 5102 is not legal in your area. Now, that is not to say that the stupid NAPA DC won't send your neighborhood store some though!
You won't get it at the Modesto store that is for sure. If you go into your local store and tell them to order part number GAL5102, QT5155, QTTS3 (the "line code" is MS for Martin Senour) you may just get it.

If not, then the 2.1 VOC Martin Senour primer (legal in your area) is 5104 with 5124 hardener and CS-30 reducer.
If you are going to be buying product from a non-paint store you better get familiar with Martin Senour web site. http://www.martinsenour-autopaint.com/

Click on "reference materials" then on "PDS" for product data sheets. The "Trouble shooting guide" is also GREAT reading.
