I've got the deck to the bare metal i cleaned it with acetone and primed with rustoleum primer.. then was told i had to etch the piece before priming??? This is not the final prime just a spray to keep rust off till i'am done with the rest.. do i need to start over?

You don't have to use etch primer, you could use epoxy. But honestly, your biggest mistake is using the Rustolium, that is for wheel barrels and patio chairs. Use REAL automotive primers and paints for the best results.

Find the paint store that services the body shops in the area and make friends. PPG, DuPont, S-W, Martin Senour at NAPA auto parts store, there are plenty of options. But you need REAL automotive paints.

Brian,
I am also a beginner in the body work too so thank you for your comment on Rustoleium being for wheelbarrows and the such. LOL I loved that response because believe you me, I'd have been out there with a rattle can myself doing what our friend here was going to or already did do. Thanks for stopping me before I got started. I shall read and educate myself. Spiderman.
