Where do you guys insure your classic cars (the ones that aren't driven often)?
Thanks, Chris

American Family

Edit: No mile restriction, for the appraised value, etc. They also have it as a 12 month policy so that you're covered all year. Seems they got tired of people calling to add coverage all the time when they needed to drive the car in Winter or it was a nice Spring weekend, so they set up a Classic Car policy to keep you covered all year for essentially the same amount you were paying for the 6 months in the Summer.

State Farm. Had to get an appraisal before they would insure it. Unlike a lot of insurance companies, State Farm doesn't have a restriction on how many miles you can drive a year.

Grundy seems to have the best policy.

Grundy here too. Of all the classic car insurers they were the cheapest. Just under $300 for $25000 agreed value. No milage restrictions. Must be garage kept. They even insured it before it was finished. Said just call and raise value when it's done.

You guy's might want to do a search of some previous discussions about insurance on the site here. I had State Farm too, but I changed after I got into it. Ask your agent about how they'll pay out in the event of a total loss. State Farm offers a stated value policy. The speciality insurers offer an agreed value policy. If you value the car at $25,000 and it's totalled you'll get $25.000. With State Farm you'll get what an appraiser thinks it's worth up to $25.000. I'm not sure about American Family but I'd sure be asking the same questions. You don't want to find out the hard way.

I own an insurance agency.

We use American Collectors. In some states, Grundy (and others) will only offer minimum Uninsured Motorists limits so watch out!

Also if you have an umbrella, some companies won't offer high enough limits underneath.

Watch out with State Farm also and be sure you are coverd for "agreed value".

AON Collector Car Insurance. I pay $300 per year with agreed 25k coverage. You can customize your coverage limits however you want. A lot less restrictive than other companies.

Ouch... 300 for 25k? I'm paying half that for 25k.... Then again I need the lube every time I open my daily drivers monthly statement....

Funny thing... I pay more for the Vette and my agreed value is less... I was told that because it's Newer as the reason why I pay more.

Renewed my 66 Vette @ 45k $288.

Just added a 67 Chevelle @ 30k $197 with American Collectors. This is in NJ!

Don't get too hung up on the mileage restrictions as most don't have them anymore. If they do have one it's 2500 miles & I wish I had the time to put that many on my car.

Here's a thought, we all have our collector cars insured for the value we have precieved as correct. Should we re-evaluate that scenario based on the latest Barrett Jackson auction? An identical car to mine sold for twice what I have my insured for at replacement value and I would put my title up while betting my car is better than the one at the auction.

Food for thought guy's.....the bar has been raised.....

Haggerty, agreed on value, no milage limits, flatbed towing. Half of what Allstate wanted. Yes, you should rethink what your car is insured for. When I called Haggerty about another issue they mentioned it due to the rising prices of collector cars. Sure they'll collect more in premiums but they'll also pay out more in the event of a loss.

EDIT: I did file a claim with Haggerty. Someone backed into bumper at a cruise-in. His insurance had to pay because my car was legally parked. Haggerty handled it and mailed me a check. I also told them I wanted to do the repairs myself, they paid for the parts and my labor. I think they paid $25/hr, don't remember now. Based on how they handled that claim I'll stick with them.

I have Grundy and had to make a claim due to a drunk hitting me. They settled the claim fast and sent me a check within days for the repairs that MY BODY SHOP had determined were necessary, not the adjusters!

Hagerty's flat bed option is a nice feature. Grundy doesn't offer that option.

I have Hagerty on my 67SS, 40K at less than 300. I haven't had to file a claim and hope I never have too! :D

Hagerty here also.... I have been very happy with them. I called to increase the policy and this was hassle free.....

I have a friend he was out with his 1969 Mustang the stange got jacked while they were in having dinner. the claim was filed and they received there check for the policy value with out any problems or jerking around.

Hagerty has my vote.....

I will stick with them.

Agreed. Currently with Country companies, 40K value policy, no restrictions (although my states antique plates limit me to mechanics, shows, or parades) <- hehehhehe 120 bucks a year. Will be going over to the appraisers once the salt washes away again, with fresh paint and body it should be worth more. JN

Are you refferring to bodily injury?? As a stated value policy wouldn't come into play on the vehicle, uninsured moterist as I understand it applies ONLY to bodily injury, correct? In that case you would want to make sure your health insurance was up to par for a bodily injury claim on a uninsured motorist.

Jim Grundy - Chubb is his underwriter and they have the best claim service bar non.
This link is catastrophe specific - but I can tell you they treat all claims in a similar fasion.

My quote from Hagerty was $411 for an agreed value of 25K. My car is considered "modified" since it's not the stock drive train. If it were "stock" the same coverage would be $211.

What are the restrictions on Hagerty? Can a family member who they run their MVR before they issue you your policy drive the car on occasion?? Also can you drive your car to work on occasion....NOT as a daily driver? I know NOS is not allowed with them.

I'm not an expert, but when I was shopping around for insurance I went with AON because they are much more lenient about things such as driving to work on occasion, or running an errand. I got the impression that Hagarty wouldn't cover you if you were driving to work.

No. UM refers to liability that you can't collect because of an under/un-insured driver. If I rear end you & break your spine & I have minimum or no insurance, you can't make a claim for more than your minimum (if that's what they gave you and Grundy does that in NJ) which in NJ is 15k per person.

Major medical won't cover pain & suffering. That's what you would collect from me if I had decent coverage. If your injuries are bad enough, you will need all the money you can get to support you.

Aggreed value only applies to damage on the car.

Erie Insurance here. I have antique plates (so no PA annual inspection sticker needed). Just two pictures to show it looked period correct on the exterior, and good to go.
