I inherited a 1968 Chevelle SS 396 with vin 13837. It was made the 4th week in June. The vin says its a 68 but everyone tells me it has a 69 style dash in it. My grandfather never mentioned replacing the dash. By chance, did they change the dash style before the 69's maybe with the later 1968 models? Also, it has disc brakes which I heard SS's didn't have but someone else told some did. Help! I love the car and am just trying to find something out about it. Thanks!

Can you post a picture of the car, and the dash?

If the plastic openings around the guages are Round, then it is a 69 Dash, if they are square, then it is a 68 dash.

1968 had the Ignition Switch in the dashboard, 1969 had it on the steering collumn.

Disk brakes were optional on SS cars in 68 (but they would have been the old Dual piston type instead of the single piston like 69-72 got) THey became standard on SS cars in 69.

Just a few tips to help identify it.

My question would be, was your grandfather the original owner of the car? 13837 is a 68 SS396. If it was purchased new by your grandfather in 1968 with a 69 dash from the factory then this car would be factory freak! If your grandfather was not the original owner, then someone must have installed the dash at a later date. Please post a pic.

Where is the key located? Is it on the column?

Bad part about 68's is trying to find a good condition dash bezel...
