: 1996 Geo Metro
charbilly2001 Mar 19th, 06, 11:08 PM I have a young friend who has a 1996 Geo Metro with the 3 Cyl 1 liter engine. His timing belt jumped. I am wondering if anyone can give me the timing marks for the camshaft and crankshaft so that I can get everything back in phase.
THe camshaft pulley has two pips on the outer circumference 180 deg apart and I thought those might line up with the parting line of the valve cover but that didn't work and there was no compression. Any technical assistance would be great because I have no manuals for this car.
Thanks,
Bill
pdq67 Mar 19th, 06, 11:28 PM Funny it jumped b/c I think the timing belt is good for the life of the CAR and i mean AT LEAST 250,000 miles!!
My '87 Chevy Sprint ER 3-banger went 227,000 and never missed a beat and my 2000 3-banger went 104,000 when I gave it to my Son in like new shape to TRASH LIKE HE DID!!
Not happy at all!

I'm hoping to finish my old '80 P/U for him so's he can support himself if you know what I mean..
I gotta love him b/c he's my Son!!

The Crank sprocket has a mark which lines up with a notch or mark in the rear cover or front of block . (keyway will be at straight up) Cam gear also has a mark or notch which will line up with a notch at the top of the rear cover (also at 12 Oclock)
Hope this helps

NO WAY! :)
pdq67 Mar 20th, 06, 11:15 PM Like I said, 227,000+ miles!
It supprised me big-time how good that little 3-banger 1,000 cc motor really is!!
The '87's motor had a sort of a semi-hemi head with opposing valves. The '00's motor had in-line valves.
I adjusted the valves on the '87 twice. Kinda hard to do at something like .004" and .006" lash.
AND I would buy a new '87 Chevy Sprint ER in a heart-beat today!!
I'd poke along in it and get probably 65 mpg!! EASY, commuting on the highway daily for 65 miles or so round trip!!!
I just hope the Chinese sell a car here that is comparable to the '87, size AND gas mileage-wise!!!

Not me... I've owned a 3 banger 1.0 daihatsu for 16 years 162,000 so far...Still drive it to work every day. Helps me afford the malibu. Cant neglect the timing belt though as its 10 -1 compression interference engine. If the belt brakes it bends valves.. (think your okay on the Geo) At 59 HP it will blow the doors off your suzuki swift (I mean chevy sprint) :)
pdq67 Mar 21st, 06, 8:06 AM My '87 Chevy Sprint ER Hatch, no radio or A/C, (it was a bare-bones STRIPPER), was 48hp and weighed 1505 pounds or thereabouts!
The 2000 Metro Hatch was 58hp and was a bigger car with A/C weighed about 1950 pounds or thereabouts!!
Notice the "bigger is better" trend!!
Like I said, I'd buy a new '87 Chevy Sprint ER in a heart-beat!! It was THAT good a CAR!!
