Putting together a 78 Malibu with 550 hp BB and turbo 400 with brake.

Also using narrow ford 9 inch with spool (haven't bought spool or axles yet).

Will 31 spline axles be up to the task of tranny brake launches ?

My friend ran stock axles in a 9" w/mini spool for years with a 500+ hp 454 and tbrake in a 3300# car, the gear broke first.

One my no/e buddies is having to get new axles this year, been in the truck for 5 yrs, was changing gears and going to a full spool, the axles were twisted too much, wouldnt go in the spool. Its always been a footbrake S10.

31 spline axles will be fine. I know its in the moser catalog, but I'm not sure about online, but there is a formula that tells you what force an axle can take. I will find it and let you know for sure.
