Just an FYI for those of you who are restoring consoles, dashpads, and dash housings. After help from this forum and a great amount of worrying about how to "do it right",I finally got around to restoring the mentioned items on my 70 Chevelle. For all 3 parts, I used SEM Landau Black. For the dash pad I used SEM vinyl prep prior to the dye, and for the console and dash housing I used SEM plastic prep (followed by a wiping with vinyl prep as suggested by the paint shop)
Let me tell you, they all turned out gorgeous!! I was worried about using Vinyl dye on the plastic pieces, but they turned out great. I couldnt believe it! Let me know if you have any questions or need the part #'s.

I have a lot of old paint on my Dash.. Did you use anything to clean off old paint?
Thanks

I didnt have any problems with paint on the dash. It was originally black, and I kept it that way. It just need to be recolored because it was starting to fade.
I've heard oven cleaner works pretty good, but I dont know. Seems to me it may be a little harsh. In any event, you'll want to get as much of the old paint off as possible. Then give it a good cleaning followed by plastic prep (assuming your dash is plastic, as my 70 was) The SEM vinyl dye can recommends the use of SEM Sand Free if you coat plastic, but I used vinyl prep to aide in paint/dye adhesion. The plastic parts really turned out nice. Hope this helps. Scot

Where can you purchase the plastic prep and the dye - do one of the Chevelle suppliers have it?

Rich, I just looked in the phone book under autobody supplies and picked the one closest to me. Most auto paint suppliers carry the dye, and preps. You can also get it from eastwood. www.eastwoodco.com (http://www.eastwoodco.com) (I think) Good Luck!
