1967 California Chevelle with a 283, 195 HP, attempting to validate the engine is the original one. According to the family of the original owner the engine had not been changed out and we bought the car from a family member, the original owner is deceased. The last eight degits of the vin # is 7Z154951, the number on the right side of the engine in front of the head is V06I9DJ. What am I missing? I this the correct place to look? Can the engine be validated as the original engine to the Malibu?
Appreciate your guidance?

The CON VIN on the block was not federally mandated till 1968. Prior to that they mostly did it on expensice high performance engine only. The 283 was the run of the mill base engine and probaly did not get stamped. Some did and many did not. All depended on plant operations.

So it would not be unusual to not find it on a 67 283 or even a 327 unless it was a hi-perf version (Those got stolen a lot).

DJ is the correct suffix code for a 283/195hp w/A.I.R. Is the smog equipment still on the car? I would doubt if anyone outside the 'hobby' would worry about replacing a 283 with a correctly coded suffix block, probably is original to the car. You might check the block for casting number 3896948 which was the Flint, MI cast 283.

It is so enjoyable being associated with all of you, I learn more every day and I'm always surprised at your knowledge. The car is a California car, Freemount Ca, Z, and it came with the A.I.R. system still installed. It was complete except it was not working, belt was connected but the pump hoses were rerouted and the lines were patched with duct tape. I removed all of the A.I.R. system and saved it and then converted it to a Texas car under the hood. The block casting number is 3896944, four numbers off of what was previously provided (3896948).
Again I express my enjoyment, I orderd a 1967 L79 Malibu back in 66 and got it in Dec 66 at the tender age of 17, @ $106 a mounth for 36 months. I kept it until 1977, lot of rat racing, stolen and stripped three times and I put it back together each time, marriage, Viet Nam, kids, mortage and I thought I knew a 67 Chevelle. I learn every day from you.
Thanks

Casting 3896948 is a Tonawanda cast block for 67. Being that it had a Flint ID number, I assumed (wrongly in this case) it was a Flint casting.
