: Should I have to pay "Doc" Fees?
chevelless502 Mar 16th, 06, 8:52 AM I am trying to work a deal on a different truck and they are wanting to charge me 98.88 for a "documentation fee". I know its only $100 bucks but should i push to not pay this fee that they are just tacking on to get another $100 out of me?
Just want some opinions.
Andy
I would push to not to pay it. At least have them knock another $200 off the price if they need a doc fee :D Be willing to pass if they don't budge. $100 = a couple dinners out ;)
bisjoe Mar 16th, 06, 9:32 AM Everything's negotiable, but they like add things like that after you agree to the price. You need to negotiate saying it's the "out the door price" as I did on the wife's Liberty, that's tax, license and all. Then they have to figure out what part of that is for the actual car, drives them nuts but keeps you on your budget for the purchase.
J70Chev Mar 16th, 06, 12:11 PM depending on the price and promotion going on there might not be any wiggle room. When I bought my 05 2500HD during the employee discount, it was what it was, and tax is tax, no real negotiation other than the interest rate.
Hell, 35,500 was sticker, 30,500 was emp discount -3000 GM rebate -3000 GM Card earnings, couldn't do much better than 24k plus tax on a brand new crew cab.
mpar Mar 16th, 06, 12:24 PM My wife and I just brought a New Hyundia Azera, the dealership that we got it from doest charge the doc fee and they gave us the best price over other dealerships.
So it depends on the dealership.
Shop around till you find the deal that you are happy with.
dittoz Mar 16th, 06, 1:41 PM Sounds like a lot of residential mortgage lenders out there...
"Doc" fees are often just padding the numbers.
Make them explain to you what this fee is - you'll get a pretty good sense if they're passing on a cost or if it's just addt'l profits for them.
zeke67 Mar 16th, 06, 7:52 PM When we bought the '05 Mustang GT Convert, the fee was $500. We queried and they basically said it was to keep the dealer profitable. They absolutely would not negotiate it or the car price to compensate, but then this was on a car that they knew they would sell by the end of the week to someone else so what could we do but pay. About the same time, we had a friend that bought a new Lexus and their fee was $700!
Ahh! Life in Miami!
68L79ELCAMINO Mar 16th, 06, 8:33 PM As I understand it it is up to the dealer. I wouldn't pay it, ever. There are actual fees like title and lien fees which in my state total $17.00. Doc fees are code words for extra profit. If you can't get around it I'd look elsewhere.
Jim Mac Mar 16th, 06, 8:46 PM when we bought my wifes car, I asked about the doc fees and when they told me its for title transfer, I told them we can take care of it ourselves. then they went on to say how it take 2 hours at DMV, which around here is true. I told them we have a DMV on base and since you need a ID to get on the base its never really crowded, we were in and out in about 15 minutes. and saved 200 bucks. Jim
SS_Sean Mar 16th, 06, 9:02 PM These documentation fees were discussed a month or two ago. Do a search and see if you can find it. There was some good information in that thread, as I recall.
71elkySS454 Mar 16th, 06, 11:02 PM Most all dealerships now charge some sort of 'doc' fee. That is seperate from the actual fees for title and taxes. As posted by others, $98 is cheap compared to most. If you can find a dealer that doesn't charge one and has the vehicle you want at the same price, then buy it there; otherwise you are doing OK. As a former GM dealership sales manager, I didn't like having to explain them to customers either. Our dealership charged $165 at the time. Some dealerships with the same lines in the same area charged as much as $600 per car! Don't expect any dealership to drop the charge. They may drop the price of the vehicle the amount of the fee to make up the difference, but the fee itself will stay. Been there, done that.
