Looks to be a crate LS-6, not a warranty LS-6..many were sold at the parts counter.

Yes, the CRR suffix on the pad states that the block was originaly used in a 1970 Chevelle SS that was a 454ci 450HP with a TH400 transmission. It appears the somewhere in time that engine was rebuilt due to the '71 heads.

I disagree with the rebuilt part..block is also cast 71...date code is misread from the block.( D g 71 ) this most likely was a complete engine that GM sold over the parts counter after the LS-6 70's made their mark on the performance market..it was a easy upgrade that many buyers/racers took advantage of.

The block is a '71 block. The dg71 is an April ? 1971. The g is probaly a number that is hard to read because of the casting. It is probably an over the counter LS-6 engine bought in mid to late 1971.

If in late 71 I wanted to buy a LS-6 motor for my Chevelle with a auto trans I am pretty sure I could have ordered a complete motor from GM..it would have been coded CRR..a four speed CRV, but if I blew up the motor in my LS-6 Chevelle and needed a warranty replacement it would have had a CE code unless the other thing happened..someone re-stamped the block!!
