: Harwood B22104 outlaw hood help
smokumchevy Jun 6th, 00, 5:33 AM Morn people,
I've ordered the Fibreglass Outlaw 4"cowl, Harwood B22104 hood, low tension spring kit and a pair of locking hood pins.
I have a few questions to throw at ya:
1) I've heard that because this hood is used both on 68 & 69, early & late years that there are possible hinge modifications needed. Any idea's what I'm in for ??
2) Suggestions on a safe and proper fuel pressure guage mounting on this hood ?? Being fibreglass and the fact that it doesnt have the slotted grilling at the rear like my stock hood, I guess its one of those one chance things and I don't want to muck it up.
3) What is your best proceedure for line up and drilling for the hold down pins??, How bout the four dressplate screws into fibreglass??, as I've never done it myself.
Everything should be in by Friday, so all methods/suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Pass ya later,
-Greg

Steve R Jun 8th, 00, 2:30 PM When it comes to the differences in hinges between 68 and 69 it is a matter of where the bolts holes are on the hood. If you are buying aftermaket hood and hinge you should not run into this problem.
If it were my car I would mount the fuel pressure guage in the interior by using an isolator. If you want it on the hood I would drill a hole for the line (use real steel braided line) and insert a rubber grommet in the hole to prevent fraying of either the line or the hood. Then mount the guage where you want it, just make sure there is enough slack in the line so that it is not pulled tight when the hood is opened.
Steve R.
smokumchevy Jun 9th, 00, 5:25 AM I'll be using my original hinges but with the light duty springs recommended by Harwood.
Any tips or suggestions on how to get an accurate line up for hood pin drilling into the fibreglass yet ?? Geometry and Math were not my thing in school.
I think I will fab a bracket for the fuel gauge to mount on the car and have it come out from under the hood in front of the windsheild while leaving enough clearance to open hood without difficulties. (just an idea at this time - will have a better picture if it will work once the hood is in place).
Going to pick the stuff up in a couple of hours and attempt the install so any more responses would be appreciated.

smokumchevy Jun 10th, 00, 7:10 AM Damn, damn, damn,
Went to get the hood and pulled it out of the box to find the cowl box area cracked with a piece missing. No damage to the box so I assume it happened at the factory. I offered to pay $500 Cdn as is, instead of the $723 Cdn, so my supplier contacted his and they refused it saying it could easily be repaired. I told them "Not by this guy at full pop, send me a new one".
Well, looks like a new one will be in next Wednesday, and I requested due to cross border shipping to open it up at source, inspected it, and put some PROPER packing in it this time just in case my luck is crapping out on me.
Fingers are crossed and anticipation is peaking. I've got to have that hood so I can size up and run a breather on my country roads driven baby, (paved but fields are always being worked on and raising dust).
Anyway, from looking at the hood she gonna look awesome on the beast.
Later,
-Greg

fOR DRILLING THE PINS, i WOULD SUGGEST ; iNSTALL THE HOOD and align it, iNSTALL THE PINS
(DOH darn caps)
Now, put a dab of paint on the pins and touch the hood down. The paint spot is where you drill the hood. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

smokumchevy Jun 13th, 00, 5:35 AM 283v8,
Thanks, would it make sence then to just drill a very small pilot hole from the inside out and then stage up to the size I need from the outside in to prevent finish shatter on the gelcoat side ??
Also, I was just thinking, as this is fibreglass do I have to protect it somehow from the heat of the engine compartment with some kind of media to prevent heat warp or will it be OK ?? (I'm not concerned about the noise so sound deadener is not necessary).
Thanks,
-Greg

SS540 Jun 13th, 00, 2:50 PM My experience with the only Harwood hood I owned was that all 4 edges were rough cut and had to be trimmed with a cutoff tool to make them look presentable. Maybe their quality has improved since I bought this hood about 4 years ago. I have a Glasstek on my current car and it had a rolled front edge and the other 3 edges were nicely finished. My Glasstek is heavier than the Harwood was and it has a nice frame on the underside. Check out the pix on page 7 (I think) of Bench Racing.

smokumchevy Jun 17th, 00, 8:57 PM Ah Crap !!!
This has got to be the wrong hood, there is now way to make it bolt up to the original hood brackets at all.
The general fit is ok, and man, does it look mean, but there aint no way to line up, or redrill the bracket for those pesky mtg bolts to work.
I did notice the sticker under the hood says B22104 bolt on hood (which is listing for 68-69 Chevelle), but there is also 4 checkboxes under that number which are -1 / -2 / -3 / -4, and the one I have is checked off as -3. No idea what this is about as listing in book did not indicate these nor their meanings, and I did indicate the make, model and year when ordered.
Hood mtg pad looks something like this: ------------- 12.75" CtoC mtg bolt spread.
Bracket seat looks something like this: -----------___ 14.5" CtoC mtg bolt spread.
As it stands I thought I could simply redrill the bracket to proper mtg location, but rear bolt (no matter how much I try to skimp on forward or rearward hood alignment), would fall directly at the angle where the bracket
dips lower at the rear, so no way it can work.
What a disappointment, I was really looking forward to showing up a the cruises this weekend 50-75lbs lighter and a whole lot meaner, not to mention actually getting some air to my carb (current hood lays down right on top of open carb - no clearance at all).
I'll have to wait till Monday to contact the supplier and see what gives. If unresolvable, then at this point I'm just going to cut a hole in my old hood and order just the cowl and pop rivet it in (YUK !!!), then order my MT ET Streets for traction with the money saved.
You would think for $800.00 +, you could do just the minor trimming and TAH DAH your done. But then again since when has this been a perfect world, especially when it comes to our cars.

Chvelle Jun 18th, 00, 2:21 AM Doing a search on the 68-69 hoods, Plain69 was told by Harwood to use 68 hinges.
Here are some of the posts I found that concern the Harwood hoods that might be of interest to you. 68 hinges (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum10/HTML/000502.html)
68 uses shorter hinge (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum3/HTML/001354.html)
Harwood quality (http://www.chevelles.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/004306.html)
Hope you get it figured out. Good luck

smokumchevy Jun 18th, 00, 5:15 AM Thanks Richard.
Can anyone confirm for me that the '68 hinge is a "flat non stepped down at rear" seating where the hood would rest on ?? or does this not become a concern with the CtoC bolt spread of 12.75.
Possibly someone could posting a pic and measurements would be great as there are a couple of guys within a 1hr drive that may have these 68 hinges and I would be eager to do just that rather than dicker back and forth with the supplier, let alone all the shipping.
Greatly appreciated everyone !!

smokumchevy Jun 21st, 00, 6:38 AM Ok, here's the update and FYI's:
You've got to use early '68 Chevelle hinges or the following:
68-74 Nova or Omega
71-74 Ventura II
68-72 Tempest
Picked a pair up around the corner at the scrap yard in perfect condition for $40.Cdn and hope to get at her today.
Thanks for the help people, will post a pic when done as when I did the fitment she looked fantastic, only need to trim out for the rubber tabs (as much as I can tell so far). Wish me luck.
Later,
Greg
