: Pj Gear Drive Install
firemaneil Mar 12th, 06, 6:59 PM I'm Installing A Pj Gear Drive On My 396. Can Someone Tell Me How The Dogbone Gear Goes In? Larger Gear Left? I Figured The Stud That Sticks Out Farther On The Larger Gear Goes Toward The Block. Is That Right? ALSO IS A CAM BUTTON NECESSARY WHEN RUNNING THE GEAR DRIVE? Thanks IN ADVANCE, Neil
Johnny O Mar 12th, 06, 7:12 PM Not trying to be a smarta** here, but where are your instructions? I had one years ago, but cant remember for sure. I believe the larger gear was on the left, but wouldnt bet on it. Not sure about the cam button. Normally, you only need one with a roller cam.
firemaneil Mar 12th, 06, 11:29 PM the reaSON FOR THE BUTTON I WAS THINKING( SCAREY ) THAT WITH THE CHAIN DRIVE THE CHAIN WOULD HOLD THE CAM IN PLACE JUST BY THE CHAIN'S DESIRE TO RUN ON THE CENTER OF THE CRANK GEAR.BUT WITHOUT THE CHAIN THERE WOULD BE NOTHING BUT THE COVER TO STOP IT. I AM A NOVICE SO ANY INFO WOULD BE GREAT. THANKS
sschevellefan Mar 13th, 06, 1:21 AM You need the cam button. Otherwise the cam will walk on you and cause some damage to your motor. I ran a PJ yrs ago and I can`t remember what way the dogbone goes. By the way, turn the caps off, no reason to yell, lol.
forcd ind Mar 13th, 06, 6:08 AM you really need the instructions, because there are certain clearances you have to maintain, and they tell you what to do-as i remember the larger of the 2 gears is the power gear, the smaller is an idler gear, so if you visulize engine direction and its effect on the gears you will see how it goes-cam buttons normally are dictated by cam type(flat tappet/roller) cant remember if with gear drive
im pretty sure the larger gear goes on the pass side, and as i remember you have to grind on the larger stud to get alighnment
again, if you dont have the instrutions, i would get them from pj
good luck
firemaneil Mar 14th, 06, 2:06 AM Thanks For Th Info I've Been Looking For The Pj Website But To No Avail Any Help Would Be Appreciated. Neil
I checked the Summit web site, and to my suprise, there is no Pete Jackson web site! Kinda weird, but oh well! I have a PJ in my 388 (in sig). I installed a good 5-6 years ago or so. I have no idea if I still have the instructions, and if I do still have them, I have no idea where they'd be at. All I know is that the bigger gear goes on the left side (when looking at the block/passenger's side). I remember the instructions saying that you have to measure the distance between the cam button and timing cover, then from there figure out how many spacers, if needed, need to be installed. I remember installing two spacers, then I had to resort to installing a washer to get the desired spacing correct. Just remember, not all timing covers are the same! Also, you have to check the block to make sure that there is plenty of clearance between the gears and block, or else you'll have to grind some material from the block. Hope I've been of some help, and good luck!
firemaneil Mar 15th, 06, 3:00 PM LXS thanks for the input. that's how i have it now what do you think about the cam button? seems like it would have to be a pretty short one to work. i'll haave to search around for a shorrt one. neil
Did you buy the PJ new (came in a box)? Or did you buy it used? If you bought it new, the cam button should have came with it. It's been soo long that I don't really remember how "big" the button was, I just remember using some playdoh to do the measurements for me. I simply stuck it to the cam button, installed the timing cover, then took the cover off to see how flat the playdoh was. Then compared it to the instruction's clearance recommendation, and played with the spacers from there. I don't know if anyone else does/did their measurements the way I did, but nearly 6 years have gone by, and I haven't had any problems whatsoever. If I had, or knew where the instructions where at, I'd definatly type them out for you (I'd scan and upload, but I don't have a scanner). If possible, maybe try to go back to the store/shop you bought the PJ from and see if you can get or make a copy of the PJ installation instructions (that is if you don't have the instructions). I hope I've been of some help. Good luck Neil!
firemaneil Mar 15th, 06, 7:01 PM great idea on the button spacing. it was used i'll go to a parts store and check them out for the instructions thanks for your help neil
