: oil out of exaust! HELP
dmccoy72 Mar 12th, 06, 2:00 PM i just put on my new intake. the car starts fine and idles good...very smooth. except that every time i start it it backfires/pops through the drivers side tail pipe. The loudness and length between the pops vary but everytime i step on the gas they get louder and more frequent (back to back almost).
Also, I noticed that oil is being shot out of the same tail pipe that is popping. It is being sprayed in little specks at a time, but whenever i start the car it shoots a big burst.
WHAT COULD THIS BE CAUSED FROM?
i tightened the header bolts to the heads, screwed the carb down good, slightly advanced timing
The intake is an Edelbrock Perfomer RPM Air-Gap, and when i put the gaskets on, I placed a metal restrictor sheet on the drivers side gasket in the center hole. The car is a 72 and the heads have a port for this hole but the intake does not have ports for the center holes. Should i remove the manifold and take this restrictor off the center hole or does it not matter b/c the maniold does not have ports there?
driver Mar 12th, 06, 3:09 PM You did run a PVC....???
Johnny O Mar 12th, 06, 3:42 PM You dont need that plate with that type of intake, it will just block off the holes without the plate. But that would not be your problem I dont believe. Did you do anything else beside the intake change?? Are you positive it's actually oil that's coming out, or is it just water that's picking up some soot from the exhaust?
Bob West Mar 12th, 06, 4:02 PM Did you torque the intake bolts? gasket slipped?, sucking oil from the lifter gallery? You had no problem with this before the intake swap? Timing?

Was it running ok before you messed with it?
Did you adjust the valves?
Check the firing order.
67ss Mar 12th, 06, 4:29 PM have the heads been milled a lot?
driver Mar 12th, 06, 6:30 PM Are you running a e-vac system?
ratengine Mar 12th, 06, 6:30 PM Your intake gasket did not seal right. You will have to pull off the intake and
replace the intake gasket with a new one. When you put on intake try not to move around the intake to much gasket will slide. I use super weather strip yellow glue to tack down intake gasket. Dont use any rtv by the intake ports. Use rtv by water outlets. It happen to me just as you describe and when i removed intake gasket it was way off. I had a oil puddle in the intake ports. Good luck.
dmccoy72 Mar 12th, 06, 10:48 PM how could the gasket have slipped though? when i set the manifold down i was able to screw in all the bolts very easily.
anyways, ill take it off tomorrow and look at the gaskets. thanks for the help, i hope this fixes it. it was running fine before i put it on
engineguy Mar 13th, 06, 10:46 AM If the engine is not smoking and it really is oil that you see coming out of the exhaust the culprit would be bad exhaust seals/stems/guides. Look at the stuff coming out though, as it could be condensation from the muffler with specs of carbon.
I think the popping sound may be a couple of plug wires that got switched. Double check your firing order.
mbj359 Mar 13th, 06, 10:48 AM Did you install the intake gaskets with the raised side to the intake?
