: Should I paint my new gas tank?

Hi,
I just got a brand new 20 gallon tank for my 72 chevelle from the Paddock Parts store. I also got a new sending unit, straps, anti squeak kit etc. My question is before I install the tank, should I paint it with something to keep it from rusting? The catalog I ordered it from said it was electro plated or something like that, but should I paint it with some POR-15 or someting like that just to be safe? What about the straps? Thanks a lot!

Personally I don't understand everyone's obsession with por-15.

If you don't have rust you don't need it!
Its not like our cars are going to be driven in the snow and salt anymore.

Paint the straps satin black and clear coat the tank.

Clearing the tank is a great idea.as for the straps, remove one of the old ones and look at the back side this will tell you if it black or clear.

If the tank is zinc plated or galvanized I doubt if clearcoat would stick. I would just leave it as-is. I media blasted and painted my used tank with BC/CC black urethane (I know it's not original) and it turned out great and has held up well (in the garage, of course).
Quality galvanizing should hold up halfway decent provided the car isn't out in the elements.

bolt it in as-is. I have had one for 6 years and it looks fine, with no rust or yellowed old clear coat.

the clear coat has been on my Camaro's tank for 4 yrs. now and its just fine.
just did the Chevelle tank about three months ago.

NO YELLOWING and it is not coming off!

just wipe the tank down good with wax & greese remover.

i used plasti-kote engine enamel.

I scuffed my new tank a red scotchbrite and cleared it with Dupont V7500 urethane clear, still looks awesome three years later.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I may as well use the clear coat just to be on the safe side. Thanks again!
