My chevelle has a vinyl top that was originally white and was painted black several yrs ago.The white is showing throught and needs repainted. I am wondering if I should use vinyl paint on it or dye. I don't want it to glossy. Has anybody painted a vinyl top and what kind of paint did you use?

Dupont and PPG both offer vinyl paint that will work on your top, they are low gloss and usually used on interior pieces. They can be mixed to match the level of gloss you are looking for. Contact your paint supplier and they should be able to set you up. You shouldn't have any trouble if the paint that is on there is adhereing well just thin. If the paint is peeling then you might as well just replace the top.

Why don't you install a new black vinyl top. They are only about 65 bucks. The paint and vinyl dye will cost at close to that. Depending on how long it has been on, but it might need to be changed anyway. They fabric underneath gets brittle after years of sunlight. Not too hard to install. There are plenty posts on here that explain how to do it. Just might need a buddy to help.

JMHO, I think it would look a lot nicer.

I have seen a couple cars that removed the vinyl and painted the top, looks decent and makes sense for a car that must stay outside where the top has to battle sunlight and keeping water from rusting out around the glass

Of course it doesn't look as good as a real vinyl top, but like I said I don't think it looks bad either

Hehe, mine isn't a vinyl top and its rusting anyway! :D California car, built in Van Nuys and all that jazz but spending its life near the Pacific took its toll. Oh well, the engine rumbles and the wheels turn; it gets DRIVEN.

I'd just get it replaced. I've never heard of a vinyl top being painted and don't think it could look too good. Especially if old paint is already chipping off. It's not too hard to do, any trim/upholstery shop can do it or you can. The toughest part is getting off the moldings without damage.
