I was wonderring if anyone can give me some info on the vehicle property tax in North Carolina. Me and the family may be moving to either Mooresville (Iredell county) or Cornelius (Meck). We are also considering Concord. I am basically trying to find out how much I going to get hit for each year for my 2005 Trailblazer, 1995 Silverado and my 1972 Chevelles SS. Any help will be most appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Hey Tom as a fellow Long Islander and been living in NC for about 15 yrs you have nothing to worry about, your property taxes will be so much lower you will not mind paying vehicle tax, my 66 Chevelle is about $25 and my wife's 04 Accord is about $225 but my 1600 sq ft house on a 1/2 acre is $800 a yr. And the garbage man picks up the trash at my house I don’t even have to bring it the street! Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. I'm originally from N. Massapequa

Thanks for the reply. What part of NC do you live in and how do you like it? I'm really gonna miss LI, I've lived here all my life, but it's getting too expensive to stay. Our school district is one of the worst on LI and to move to a better neighborhood would make it even more expensive for us (up to $10-$12,000 in property taxes alone, not to mention $400,000 for a 3 BR, 1 BA fixer-upper). We have a 10-month-old son and we want him to grow up in a good environment. Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Tom, I live just outside of Winston Salem NC which is about 60 miles south of Virginia in the middle of the state, all places have there problems, but nothing like the magnitude of LI. The homes, taxes and lifestyle is much easier here. My advise is come down and check things out, you can search the local newspapers classifieds for jobs before you come down by Internet. You mentioned the Concord area, it is very nice and growing fast, also what type of work do you do? I do still miss LI but I know I added 20yrs to my life not having to drive in that traffic, My family and I have no regrets! I do miss crusing Hempstead turnpike BurgerKing in Bethpage, 231, Wellward ave, Sunrise hwy, but that was back in the late 70's . I bet it's not the same.

By the way, $400,000 buys you a mansion down here, adverage 2000 sq ft house is $160,000

Mr Bill,
Im a IT systems engineer. I started considering NC when my friend invited me down to his place in Huntersville for a week (he moved there about a year and a half ago). He sold his tiny house in East Meadow for 420K and bought a 2400sq ft house for 180k cash (he owed 200k on the East Meadow house). This guy has no mortgage now and money in the bank for his kids future. That would take some real stress off of me; especially in my field where layoffs are always possible. Right now we are living from paycheck to paycheck. There is a company based in Columbia SC that is real interested in hiring me as a field engineer for their Charlotte offices (I might be making a trip down there this coming week to meet with them one more time). I will be potentially taking a 25 percent pay cut, but I will no longer have the 2000.00 per month mortgage payment and crazy utilitiy costs. My wife currently works from home full time but a move like this would make that an option instead of a nesessity. What struck me was how clean the area was. We checked out an area called Birkdale Village which is like a small Urban area right near Lake Norman. It seems like a real nice area.
What does concern me a little bit is the climate. I myself love the fall/winter and colder days and really dont like extreme highs. Last August we went to lake norman and noticed that the water was 90 degrees. I couldnt beleive that a lake that big can get so hot. Im not sure if that is the norm or if we were down there during some freakish heatwave (during that week I called my Father in NY and he said it was real hot there too). Also I saw some real big bugs crawling around my friends house. Ive never seen such big bugs. And of course my family is saying how its "unsafe" to live so close to the Nuke plant. My wife says Im just making excuses because Im scared S**T of leaving as I know that coming back would be virtually impossible. Any more advice would definately be appreciated. You can either post or email me at nebula72@hotmail.com.
PS I havent done 231 in about 7 years as Suffolk Police pull you over for the hell of it; also its getting real dangerous as well. Its ironic because I used to cruise Hempstead TPK and 231 every night when I had the small block. Now that I have the 502, Im too scared to flex some muscle. I guess that what happens when you hit your 30s and have a baby.

Thanks alot

Tom

Moved from the other side of NY from Buffalo. My property taxes here are still less than they were there 12 years ago Utilities are also reasonable.

Yeah, but that's been changing rapidly because all you folks sell your $400k house in Jersey then come down here and pay cash for a new one. It's driving prices way out of reach for us 'locals' who have been making a NC salary and owned the $160k house. The developers know the transplants have the cash to buy a $300k house, but the natives like myself don't, and are basically forced out of the market. Most of the new neighborhoods around me are building these huge ugly houses by the dozens and selling them for $250k-400k. I couldn't even dream of buying a new house in this area, and I make what is a decent middle income salary for NC and owned your normal $160k NC house. That's part of the reason NC has the largest percentage of mobile homes in the country, only the transplants can afford the new stick built homes. Growing from the center out, the whole state is turning into a big suburban sprawl.

anyway, back on topic, I pay about $250 a year in vehicle taxes for the Colorado and the chevelle combine.

My wife and I are also looking to go to NC. I'm origionally from Va and lived in Fl for a while but somehow ended up getting stuck on Long Island. We are both very big into racing, both Nascar and Road Racing and rumor has it we're about to lose our last short track. Getting tired of paying 10k a year in property takes and probably just as much in utilites for nothing.... My wife too in is IT, we don't expect for her to make the same salary there that she makes here but we can pretty buy anything we want with the equity in our home.

How do they figure out your vehicle taxes? I don't even know when we go what cars will be coming or if we will just sell them off and start over.

The only thing is that I do live in one of the best school districts in NY and I definitely want to move to an area with comparable schools....

In addition to the yearly motor vehicle property tax, I seem to recall paying a one-time highway use tax when first registering a vehicle here after moving from out of state. I hope I'm remembering that correctly and not misleading you.

A quick search of the ncdot.org website showed this:
"Out of state residents moving to North Carolina pay tax according to the value table up to a maximum of $150.00. If a sales or use tax was paid to a taxing jurisdiction outside North Carolina within 90 days of titling the vehicle in North Carolina, credit will be allowed for the tax paid upon presentation of proof of payment."

I would have no clue where to get proof of tax paid except trying to get DMV to give it to me. Not so great with keeping reciepts... Max of 150 is still much cheaper than here, everything is much cheaper than here...

Wow, never expected to see so many fellow LI people planning to move to NC. I moved here in 90 for the same reasons as everyone else the taxes are a killer on the island. The tax structure here is better but it all depends on where you move to.
In Raleigh (wake county) a pet is considered a taxable item. Yes they expect you to pay property tax on your dog or cat, and the tools you have in your garage or shed. From what my accountant said the other day any item that is to be considered a luxury there is a tax on it. Not like many people claim those items but still just wanted to give a word of warning
