: How do I clean up butyl tape
Fester May 30th, 02, 9:34 AM I'm pulling the front and rear windshields during my resto and want to know what would be best to use in order to clean out the old Black butyl @$#%* all over the channel. I'll need to do some bodywork in the area and plan to do a BC/CC before reinstalling the windows.
Also.... can the small studs in the channel be replaced if lost to corrosion or simply are missing. I'm missing just a few, I'm not sure if I could get away without using them.
Thanks for any help..

Ricky-G May 30th, 02, 12:08 PM I use a putty knife to remove as much as I can,Then I use a rag with some thinner to get the remaining parts off. As far as the studs for the mouldings go,You can buy screw in replacement ones at any autobody supply store.

Fester May 30th, 02, 4:28 PM Thanks for the tips....Any idea who sells the correct clips??? I have seen them on Ebay and in resto catalogs, any idea who else might have the correct style??
zioFrank May 30th, 02, 5:19 PM Check with your local auto paint supply or body shop, some have much better prices on the clips than some of the catalogs do.

dabuickman May 30th, 02, 6:50 PM for getting off the buytl from cloth seats and other interior pieces.
get some release agent. it comes in a spray can. stop in at any glass shop or body shop supply. if you see a guy installing a w/s on the road ask him for a can.
to use it..spray it directly onto the spot and with a paper towel or rag wipe it,then repeat till its clean.let the spot dry and good as new.
another tip for removeing from pinchweld...
spray buytl with soapy water first and wear latex gloves, keep the scraper wet too.
yet another tip...
if its a big glob of black goo... with latex gloves get a handful in a ball and use it to pull the rest off pinchweld. it is a mess sometimes. good luck. rob
Dino May 30th, 02, 8:26 PM For cleaning it of of metal, use a wax and degreaser by PPG, for the cloth, I would start off with a piece of ice and rub it across the butyl tape, making it almost freeze. This works on gum in your cloth seats (and hair) and I have had some luck with it on small amounts of b. tape.
