: Trim polishing?

I tried to polish the trim on my 82 El-Caballero with the Wenol polish, but had little success in removing the milky hase.

I read some of the postings about using oven cleaner to remove a coating? Is there a coating? and Will this work for the trim on the 82? or Is there a better way to get a new shine on the old trim?

Thanks,
DTV

DTV, I may be wrong, but isn't the trim on those models anodized/aluminum. I don't think wenol will work. Also oven cleaner may ruin anodizing. But like I said I'm not really sure. But I also would like to know the answer if you find out. Good luck. Jim

I did some polishing on my trim very recently
using a buffing wheel..Of course all the trim
was off the vehicle...After setting since '86 My trim was in very hazy condition but buffing improved it vastly. I don't know what type of metal you're working with but there are all types of buffing compounds for different metals..

You need to remove the anodizing before polishing. The oven cleaner will work, but its trial & error on how long it needs to sit. Too long & it will eat into the aluminum. I've used it, but not my first choice.

A product which works very well is Blue Lightning Anodizing Remover . Its about $15.00 for a pint & works real well. I bought mine at a swap meet, but they have a web site. Do a search at www.google.com (http://www.google.com)

Once the anodizing is removed, you can polish the aluminum fairly easily.

Oven cleaner works well to remove the clear. After you buff the piece back out you must re clear it. I used a product called everbrite and it is excellent. You can get it at www.everbrite.net (http://www.everbrite.net) . A 4oz bottle goes a long way.
