: muffler issues
maikolo Mar 10th, 06, 2:59 AM I have just been reading up on mufflers on how loud or quiet people prefer them to be and what brand since Im planning on gettin new exhaust system.
Im just wondering for most of you convertible folks out there have issues with loud mufflers when the top is down.
Mine is stock so is fairly quiet but im looking to get a little more deeper growl.
Its just that I hear sum people complaining about interior noise being bothersome but just wanted your guys opinions.
right now Im looking for the flowmaster super 40s but Im not sure how loud those really would be with an X-pipe set up. Im looking for a more meaner deeper sound but just not too LOUD and annoying.

zrwhat Mar 10th, 06, 9:27 AM Maikolo,
It's a matter of personal taste on the noise issue, you can ask 10 different people and you'll 10 different answers! I have a set of flowmaster 40's on my big block Chevelle convertible and although it sounds OK, it gets annoying on the highway and with the top down to me, its just as loud inside the car as it is outside the car! I recently installed a M-22 rockcrusher and can't hardly hear the gear whine for the exhaust noise. As soon as my new 2 post lift gets here and it is installed, first project for me is to take the flows off and replace them with a quieter set of factory style Hemi mufflers, I put a set on my LS-6 hardtop and they have a nice deep "growl" sound, not a obnoxious "look at me" sound.
Another thing that changed my mind was a relative who is into 5.0 Mustangs, told me not long ago when I stopped by his house my car sounded like a 5.0 with flowmasters, he could hear me 2 blocks before I got to his house, he thought one of his "stang" buddies was stopping by, he was surprised to that it was my 70 SS 396 convertible instead of a "rustang"
Like I said, it's just a matter of opinion on your own taste, I just don't like to attract a lot of attention if I decide to "crank er up" and twist a few rpms.

Wheelhop Mar 10th, 06, 12:51 PM If somebody told me they thought I was driving up in a "Rustang" I might choke them to death and bury them with the mufflers!
maikolo Mar 10th, 06, 2:45 PM hah rustang, man I get alot of those mustangs rollin up next ta me revin there loud as muffler lol
anyways I hear ya,
I would luv to just upgrad to a more meaner sounding chevelle without the annoyance .
might be looking towards the dynomax

chester Mar 11th, 06, 7:35 AM maikolo,
I have a set of Borlas on my 'vert which I do like. I did have flowmasters on my ram 1500 and they were to loud in the truck with the windows up or down.
lowflyer Mar 11th, 06, 1:33 PM It is a matter of taste, so for what its worth, I didn't like the drone at cruise RPM on the Flowmasters on my old (86) Vert Vette. I upgraded to Borlas and reinstalled a high flow cat to reduce the noise. I have to admit that it didn't seem to reduce any power, just noise. win win.
I just put Magnaflows on the '66 drop top Chevelle and I like the sound, but it does drone alittle louder than the stock replacement mufflers. Its a small block car, so it isn't overly loud, and its a nice deep growl at WOT.
Try asking around at some shows, to see and hear some different exhausts. Good luck.
Dropzilla Mar 11th, 06, 6:42 PM Will under carpet insulation help with the drone? Dynamat is the name I believe?

Wheelhop-It was my nephew who said that, If I killed him, I'd have to pay to bury him, besides, he owns a Rustang, you know he can't be too bright!

30-A rider Mar 15th, 06, 4:40 PM Ok here is my .02. I have a 70 Covertible with a 350 that has a mild cam, aluminum intake, hollet 600 cfm carb and stock exhaust manifolds into a 2 1/4 inch dual system with a stock style muffler. At idle you can barley hear it. On the gas you can hear a little growl but not what I would call a deep tone. I originally put this system on for fear of an dual system being obxoxious.
Fact is on these cars when the top is down the wind noise makes it hard to even hear a radio.
So, I decided to up the exhaust. I bought a hooker 2 1/2 inch system, witha set of hooker headers, and continued to use a standard style "Turbo" muffler. At idle its a little louder but not obnoxious. Anything else is a noce ddep growl, but for my ears is not what I would consider annoying.
From the motors I have done IMO, if your motor is a small block and not terribly modified regardless of exhause if you stick with a stock style muffler it will not be annoying....go with a flowmaster 40 series on anything exhaust it will be fine until you hit the gas and it will be loud.
I would suggest going to some car shows or chevelle shows to hear the other cars and ask what their system consists of...only you can truly judge the sound you are lloking for.
ranvette Mar 15th, 06, 6:56 PM I have a pair of Dyno Max Turbos on my 1970 SS 396 along with Headers.I run a pair on a 430hp 383 In my wifes 1974 vette convertible to.To Us they are just perfect I try-ed flow master but being heard from 3 blocks away and the droan was to much. step into dyno max sound room http://www.dynomax.com/
