: Fly droppings on paint job
dsr Aug 28th, 04, 12:16 AM I just got my '64 Malibu back on the road after sitting 4 or 5 years in the garage. The car has a nice paint job done back in 1991, it's a white base coat/clear coat. After washing the car I see small black specs all over the hood ,roof & trunk, which will not wash off. I'm thinking it might be fly or spider droppings. What is the best way to remove these black specs? Dave
MedicTed Aug 28th, 04, 1:22 PM First off, congrats on being driveable. I thought I was going to get mine almost ready yesterday, and the electrical gremlin got me big time. graemlins/angry.gif
Try bug and tar remover for the specks. Any auto supplier should have it. You can also try black streak remover for a RV. It's pretty much the same stuff.
SSuper Dave Aug 28th, 04, 1:32 PM Detailing clay bar should do it, and also removes junk that you can't see. Leaves a smooth shiny surface ready for wax.
cDubb68 Aug 28th, 04, 2:33 PM Although it's a newer paint job, it has sat for awhile...you could wet sand it if you know you have plenty of clear to work with.
Hi-po SS 454 Sep 3rd, 04, 1:57 AM clay bar will do the job and more....
The clay bar: Do you use it on each black spec (there are 100's of specs) or just do the bad areas like hood, roof & trunk? Or the whole car? After the clay bar do you need to wax the car? What is a good wax to use? I'm no body guy, so I'm not going to try the wet sanding. I take it the Bug & tar remover is a cleaner or wax type stuff. Dave
Hi-po SS 454 Sep 7th, 04, 1:00 AM DSR, The correct way is Claying the whole car. You need to wax after Claying. Sometimes areas are so bad you need to go over them a second time with clay. You don't need to work on each black spec. Just use clay with even strokes. I use Meguiers Tech Wax after claying. The end results are fantastic. If your the lazy type, than just do part one day and rest the next day. Sometimes I will do top portions one day and fenders and sides the next. Everybody I know that uses the clay freaks out on the results, it works.
Thanks for the replies I'll give the clay bar a try. Dave

Redmanf1 Sep 9th, 04, 3:14 AM The clay bay works great. First wash the car with dawn dish soap or the area that you are going to do. Do not let dry then take a big bucket of dawn and water to use as you do the clay bar. Keep your surface wet with this mixture. Make sure to do straight strokes. Do not use allot of pressure. Make sure to knead the clay often. If you drop it toss it away or you will be sorry that you didn't. Meguries deep crystal works nice, it is easy to apply and take off.
mr409 Sep 9th, 04, 6:34 AM If you sprayed any black paint in the area, it could be overspray. It happened to me. My car was about 10' away and the mist traveled an settled on the white paint. I had to wetsand and buff it all out AGAIN!

Over Last fall and winter ? flys got under the car covers and laid eggs or pooped on the cars.
looked like little black pin heads clusterd in areas..
He owns a body Shop and we tried Clay bar
and numerous panel cleaners & bug tar removers to no avail..
The final fix was to re-sand and buff them out.
