: Engine installation
rednecks70 Mar 8th, 06, 12:58 PM Not sure if this is the right forum, so here it goes...I'm picking up my newly rebuilt 454 next week that has brand new Brodix aluminum heads. I don't want to gaw/scratch the heads with the chain. Does anyone know where I can get a load leveler that has the 4 chains with the "L" brackets that attach to the heads? My current load leveler only has 2 chains and I don't like watching that threaded bar bow when I pick up the engine up, it's a poor design if you ask me. I've already looked in jegs, summit, ebay, jc whitney, and harbor freight. Thanks.
P.S. I know I can use one of those plates that attaches to the intake but they make me nervous.
usmcanglico Mar 8th, 06, 1:24 PM I'm kinda in the same boat. I want to install my 383 with turbo 350 attached. Is it okay to use one of those plates?

I've seen it done, but like I said above it makes me nervous. I would definitly make sure the plate is rated to handle that kind of weight.
usmcanglico Mar 8th, 06, 2:01 PM the entire front clip is off. I plan on lifting engine off stand and mounting to tranny near front of car. Then guide onto mounts so that there would be minimal time and travel on the hoist.
rbarnes Mar 8th, 06, 2:40 PM I have used both the plate and the bar with leveler on a 396 with iron heads, iron intake and stock manifolds and never had a problem. The leveler is nice because I didn't have anyone to help me put it in and I could adjust the angle of approach, it was a big help lining in up to the bell housing. I just used grade eight bolts.
usmcanglico Mar 8th, 06, 2:53 PM I have aluminum intake. That is the only possible issue. I have a chain, but no brackets.

SoCalRat Mar 8th, 06, 3:17 PM You could always pad the chains with towels to protect your heads. Put in my 454, iron heads and Muncie using the intake plate on my aluminum intake.
Just make sure the threads are lonng enough to bottom out in the intake and keep the plate tight. No problem putting it in with very little assistance from my 14 year old.

That's close...I guess I could use that but how do you attach that bracket to your chain?
Cam Sweet Mar 8th, 06, 3:33 PM Hell, go to the harware store and pick up a foot of 1" wide 1/8" bar stock, and make your own.

usmcanglico Mar 9th, 06, 12:50 PM I picked up a 2 ton leveler from HF. sounds like same or similar to yours. two chain set up.
rednecks70 Mar 9th, 06, 10:43 PM Believe it or not I found one at Pep Boys today for $30.00! There was no weight rating on the box but after a google search it looks like its rated at 1,500 pounds. Thanks for the info everyone.
usmcanglico Mar 10th, 06, 6:24 PM I just installed my 383/turbo 350 using the $18 2 ton load leveler just using the chain and bolts. Worked like a charm and only needed my wife to help guide once.
forcd ind Mar 10th, 06, 7:46 PM some of those 4 chain load levelers will hit the firewall b4 the engine is all the way back, so you have to be careful
SS_Chuck Mar 10th, 06, 10:39 PM Make sure and grease the screw on the leveler. When it's under load it doesn't like to turn without binding.
