70 Malibu with original fenders and doors. Did a resto back in 89 now want to do through it again. Both front fenders were pulled in 89 to repair some rust. The fit between fenders and doors was never quite right when they went back on. I'd like to make it right this time.

The gap between fender and door is very small in the middle and widens out at the top and bottom. It was not that way originally. Actually had to pull the fender outboard a little to keep the door from scraping when it was opened. Although it wasn't quite right, I'd done the car for my kid and he was happy with it.. BMOC even with poor fitting fenders!

Now I want to do it right. Anybody had the same experience and have and good ideas?

Thanks in advance

Lots of body work. Actually, ours was simular in some ways, correct in other ways.

In going to car shows, etc., we noticed that the cars with a little "Wider Gap" seemed to always be in great shape (No paint chips, etc).

Therefore, we moved the radiator support forward approx. 1/4" +/-. This provided a great "Seam" between the door and body, door and fender. You probably could move the body itself back the 1/4" +/-.

Our '69 Elke was a body off resto, therefore, we could correct items as we went.

Hope this helps.

Factory assembly specs will show that the fender should be outboard of the door. These specs are for 69' Chevelle...

Measure up from bottom of the fender(not the door).

Very Top outboard : .00/.06 inches
Up 23 inches outboard: .06/.13 inches
Up 19 inches outboard: .09/.15 inches
Up 14 inches outboard: .05/.11 inches
Bottom of fender/door: .00 +/- .06 inches
Door to fender gap should be .18 +/- .06 in
Fender to hood gap should be .12 +/- .08 at the rear and .12/.17 at the front.

Hope this helps. Ref: 69' Factory assy manual.
