Would like to know if anyone ever repaired the rear inner wheel housings in a 67 Chevelle. The bottom lip portion of the mine are rotted. I'm having a hard time finding replacements. Has anyone ever repaired these wheel housing?? If so, how did you do it and how are they holding up?? Does anyone have pics?? Sorry for the lenghty post. Thanks.

I second that question.....I called Goodmark as they have it listed in their parts list but it sayd "Inquire" where the price should be. The gentleman said they are still waiting for "first piece approval" and it could be another 6 months before they start production. Anothe member here stated he called nine months ago and got just about the same answer.

So.....Martin and Eric How do we fix 'em???

same situation with the 65 chevelle. Goodmark lists them, but hasn't yet made the first. None in sight, so I have been rebuilding my inner wheelhouses. the rear of mine were rusted out. So I took my cutoff air tool, cut a line about 2 inches above the trunk floor. Then drilled out the spot welds holding the rusted parts to the trunk pan, and made pieces about 4 inches long by 3 inches wide, and put them side to side. Welded the first one in place, then butted the next one to it, and so on. Looks pretty decent once the butt welds are ground down flat. Will have to finish the inside of trunk part with body filler, and the inner wheelhouse itself with spray on undercoating. Just roll up your ****sleeves and get at it. I looked at mine for months before I tackled it, glad I did. Will work fine for me.

I repaired the lip part (attatches to quarter) by bending a piece of sheetmetal to the general contour of the affected area, used it to trace a cutting line on the wheelhouse, trimmed off the excess and butt welded in place. Some tweaking was in order once it was welded in partially, then finished it up. By butt welding (as mentioned in previous post) you can grind off the welds to leave it feeling like the original (if anyone checks it for rot in the future). Worked for me!

Chief, I have been told the same thing by Goodmark over eight months ago.

I have rebuilt portions of my wheelwells and other lower portions of the '68 with good success. No welding equipment here, so I riveted the sheet metal patches into place, held in place and sealed with construction adhesive. It makes a good sound patch. Top it off with rustoleum primer and gloss black. Still holding up after 6 years of Chicago winters.

66-67 rear inner fender wells.... no problem to get, for you guys in Canada check with Cross Canada and in US Sherman Parts my body shop just got a set for 66 Nova from Cross Canada quality is fine and they tell me they will have no problem geting a set for my 66 Chevelle if needed when they replace rear quarter panel. Cross Canada and Sherman are same company

706-24 for 66 and 706-24al for 67 or 706-29

I assume one of these are the parts you are talking about.

I have put in outer rear wheelhouses in both my 69 and my 70. boy are they fun to cut out and get the new ones to fit right http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif. I had to contunially modify them and fit, time and time again. Then getting the 1/4 panel to mate up right is another thing. Anywho, those are my experiences with the rear wheel houses. Hope it helps

Freddy, are you talking about the wheel well that welds to the trunk floor or the quarter?
If its the part that welds to the quarter then I would recommend that you replace the panel and not repair the lip. It would be hard to bend the lip and get the fit on the new quarter. Ive never had any problems getting new outer wheel wells to fit to the quarters, both NOS and goodmark quarters but those were for a 70.

If its for the inner well the one that welds to the trunk floor then replacement should be pretty easy. But since you have no replacements you will have to patch them. Bhawk gives a great method of doing them, the way I would go at it. I will add tho make sure that the new metal that you are welding in is the same gauge as the old. Its just very very good practice to replace with the same gauge of metal. I would guess it at 20 gauge but a quick measurement with some calipers will tell you.

Also I highly recommend that you butt weld every seem. A butt weld leaves no seem for moisture to get trapped in and rust to form like a lap weld will. Plus it looks so much cleaner. If you take your time and make a great fitting patch you wont have that hard of problems welding it in because your gaps are even and constat. I promise you if you weld it in with a lap weld it will come back and show itself again so do it right the first time with a butt weld. Good Luck...Eric

Thanks Sevt, I'm talking about the one that welds to the floor pan. That is what I was thinking. The butt weld is the way I'm going to go. Thanks.
