: Paint on '69 SS396 Emblems

I'm in process of replacing all the exterior trim on my 69 SS396. I noticed that all the new SS396 emblems which I have purchased are chrome with the inset of the 'SS' letters painted white. The emblems which are now on my car (they may or may not be the originals, who knows?) have the white inset and the chrome, but everything except the face of the emblems is blacked out with paint. In other words, only the very front face of the letters and numbers has chrome showing, while everything else is blacked out. Is this the way they originally came, or did someone add this black paint to the emblems?

If I read you right Bill, you are saying the "outside edges" of the emblem is painted black and only the "tips facing out" are plated.

I don't think they are suppose to be like that, at least for 69. All the outside edges should be chrome in my opinion. Maybe they are for another year or I could be mistaken.

I think you meant the emblems are black and the outer edges are chrome.? Whichever way, Don is right, at least any I have seen are all plated with the exception of the inset painted white. !

Don & Tom,

Thanks for your replies. I didn't do a very good job of explaining myself in the original post. I should have just asked if the emblems originally had any portions blacked out. It appears that they did not, hence some previous owner of my car must have felt the need to do so.
