: BIG dilemma

Hey guys...I kinda have a problem. I can purchase a '69 Chevelle SS for $5500...only thing is, is that the weirdo that had it before put monte carlo quarter panels on it. I guess he wanted to make it look as custom as possible. If I purchase it, I want to eventually bring it back to its original shape. I am just curious as to how much it would cost to get new quarters put in (both materials and labor). The car is in great shape with very little surface rust. It's got a nice set of cragers and air shocks to give it a nice look. The engine is the original 396. The interior is a little ratty and needs a little work...but other than that, it's a pretty nice car. Any suggestions would be helpful!!

Thanks,
Jeremy

WHAT????????!!!!!!!! Did he put a whole Monte Carlo rear shell on the thing? I just am having a hard time picturing this. Well as far as the cost of hanging two quarters, i got quoted $800 a side for my Camino (not including parts or paint).

The Monte quarters would not fit on by them selves. He had to change the rear panel and decklid along with them at the very least. I would RUN LIKE THE WIND from this after birth!

If you were to get it REAL cheap, I'd say what the heck, give it a try. But $5500.00 ain't cheap enough. If it were some super rare Yenco or Performance Motion car or something, but I can not see wanting to get into a mess like that.

No it is not the whole rear shell, it is more of a custom job. It had the basic mold of a monte carlo, but welded into place.

Unless you can see this thing with all the upholstery out and get a REAL good idea of what they did, I repeat, I WOULD RUN LIKE HECK.

I am sorry, I have seen too many of these kind of messes. Most likly the guy who did this had his crazy little brain working on other parts of the car as well.

You see, I really wish that it was the original quarters, but I literally have been searching for months for a '69 SS 4 speed with buckets and couldn't find a damn thing under $6000 (my price range). I know that it may not be worth the money, but I really haven't found anything with the specs that I want..I'm confused!!

Jpoell,

Listen to what these people are telling you about this car unless you enjoy lots of pain and suffering. It’s my advice that you save another $6,000.00 and find a 4 speed car in the $12,000.00 range. At this price the car will still be a project. Trust me I know what I’m talking about! If you buy a car for $6,000.00 you’ll end up putting another $9,000.00 in it before it will be worth $12,000.00. Most of us have more money in our cars than we could ever sell them for. The point is reaching your destination with the least investment. I believe it will be easier to save another $6,000.00 than to buy this car and invest well over $6,000.00 to get it to a respectable level. If my insight on this in not correct someone please correct me.

It would be easier to switch a bench/automatic over to a bucket/4 speed than it would be to fix that mess. Please don't do it.

$5500 for a Chevelle/Monte b*stard car-

ROFLMAO! I guess it really is a sellers market if someone would even consider buying a POS like that! I'd would have had a good laugh and RAN away the second I saw it.

"$12,000.00 range. At this price the car will still be a project"

Who would spend 12K on a project car?! Like MartinSR said, unless its a Yenko, Baldwin Motion, Nickey or a super rare HEMI 'cuda convertible, or SS LS6 convertible... C'MON! LOL!

If someone tried to sell me car that wasn't a DOCUMENTED "Supercar" or a rare and desirable factory supercar and told me 12K but it needs work, I would run like hell from that one too.

I wouldn't spend 3k for that project but the majority of people with nice projects easily go over 12k. If you aren't touching 12k then you either got a steal of a deal and a mechanic/body man under blackmail or you just aren't hitting the details. I'll have closer to 40k into my project when completed. It isn't tough to do if you want something nice. Numbners matching, yenko blah blah blah it doesn't matter what it is, nice parts cost money!

That's Nice.

What I meant was, if you buy something that
"is in the project range" for 12K, it better be worth it. I didn't mean the end result of the total costs.

I'll bet that it isn't even really an SS 396 car as well. Unless he has documentation otherwise, or if the data plate shows one of the SS only colors. I'll hazard a guess that while he was hanging all this Monte Carlo sheetmetal, he also thought a few SS emblems and mechanical parts and such would make a fine finishing statement.

Of course, the seller only needs to find that one buyer and his job is done.
