Any Weldors????
hello all,
does anyone know a good starter welding kit to get?
i already know how to do Oxy-Acetyline Welding (still novice)
and im looking for a kit to get. im starting a full restoration on my 1969 chevelle and i will be doing some welding later on with the help of a professional welder and bodyman. so i wanna start practicing and also get a set that i will be able to use for the long run. what kinda recomendations do you guys have? and what type of welding is most related to car steels? Oxy-Ace, Mig, Tig (which i think is alittle outta my price range -especially pulse type) or others???

I bought a Lincoln MIG. I'm new to any kind of welding, but after minimal practice, I'm doing great welds. The outfit I have has infinate heat setting, and allows MIG, and straight welding, along with reversable polarity for aluminum. TIG is much more expensive, but will allow more precise welds under lower heat settings. I bought my unit for around $600. Many are cheaper, but keep in mind how fast it will pay for itself. Iwas a novice, but I have welded in new body frame mounts, and a complete three piece trunk floor. The frame mounts are nothing but large center hole washers I purchased at the hardware store for about $.30 each. I have also welded up over 30 holes in the firewall which had been drilled by various owners throughout the years. With MIG, you'll need a gas to shield the weld. Without it you'll sputter and weld really bad. With it you'll lay down welds like butter! Should you decide on MIG, you'll need to either buy or rent the gas tank. I bought mine. It cost about $80, and I just pay for refills. If you're doing a complete resto, you'll actually save money by buying a MIG welder.

Buy a good mig unit from a welding shop. They can set you up and service the unit. Local shops will get you started with the correct equipment and supplies. This will save headache and heartache in the long run.

i got an account with snap on many years ago its a rather nice deal with them every week they swing buy i pay them 60 dollars probly spent 20k with them so far. i bought a new 110 volt mig from them its the mm120 was about $1,800 it works excellent i advertise in the neighboorhood street racing sites and do a rollcage here a ladder bar mount or a driveshaft loop maybe some fenders hear and there and miscelanios brackets it paid for itself 3 times over by now after about 2 years of owning it i can weld or basically do anthing with it from 1/2 steel in 1 pass to the thinist of sheet metal and it will accept and aluminum spool gun thats an extra 800 to weld aluminum well worth it thats about 6 months old. point is i would consider goin with the mig its excellent and they snap on stand behind evrything they sell 100% it might be more money through them but no-one sells better products . hope that helps a good welder will last a lifetime
