My dads got a 350/TH350 in his '82 Datsun 4X4 and you really have to crank up the idle speed to keep it from dieing when you put it in gear. I believe this is because of the stock torque converter lugging the motor. It's only a 300 horse motor with a dual plane and a 272 Energizer Crane cam. The trani. is pretty worn out, it shifts reeeeaaaal slow when you get on it. Is their any chance a worn out trani. would lug the motor? I'm hoping it's the converter because I've got the motor pulled out so I can change the converter. I need to get the truck running decent so I can sell it. Thanks

I doubt the converter is putting that much load on the motor. Look for a vacuum leak.

The drivetrain that came in a Nova is identical to the drivetrain that came in a Chevelle, diagnosing the probelm is EXACTLY the same, what does it matter if it says Chevelle or Nova on it? I hope your being sarcastic because that REALLY ****es me off! I'm asking on TeamChevelle because they are the most knoweledgeble classic car enthusiasts on the net! Well, some of them. Zeke67, I've checked for a vacuum leak, I've even changed the cylinder heads/intake, I'm 99% sure thats not the problem! Thanks

It's a good possiblity that the tranny can do that, we had a 455 Olds motor that had no power and would over heat when driving due to a bad torque converter and tranny, I would also have the trans checked at the same time.
And yes you can ask us any question you want, most of us dont mind at all !!! that is why we are here!!!

I've seen transmission and/or converters do this too. DEFINITELY CHECK for vacuum leaks first!

I was not aware that Team Chevelle had a prohibition against discussing GM engine questions with people who decided to in stall one into a non GM car.
Nor was I aware that you (65camino) had been elected arbiter for what was right and proper for Team Chevelle to discuss.
Mr. 65Camino if you don't like what goes on here I am aware of several El Camino sites that might value your inputs more than we Chevelle owners do.
Feel free to depart anytime.
I for one am more than willing to assist anyone who has a legitimate GM question.
I think you owe 19Nova72 an apology in this forum.
