I'm curious if you can remove a vinyl top and the trim/chrome strips or whatever you like to call it around the outside of it and paint the top itself.
I currently have a 72 chevelle and I want to get rid of the vinyl top if its possible.

On a secondary note, you guys this marina blue with black stripes and jet black interior looks good? I havent seen any cars like it myself so I dunno http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I have seen this done twice...both times with good results. From a distance or at 55 MPH you almost cannot tell...ALbert

Hrm, does it just require removal of the top and the trim and some sanding? Or did they need to put a special cover on there?

I did it on my '69. I did have to deal with rust from water trapped underneath by the window to truck piece. An aftermarket filler piece was installed and it turned out great. Can't tell that it ever had a vinyl top.

Dave,

I've never done this on a 72 but I have done it on two 1969's with excellent results. Two things I found:

1) Make sure you finish off the seem well between the quarter panel and the roof at the C Pillar. They seem to be finished a little rougher from the factory on vinyl top cars versus non vinyl top cars. The filler is lead so be careful when sanding.

2) When the trim was removed there were some holes that had to be welded up.

Hope that helps. Good luck.
