We have Goodmark quarters. Is the primer on then from the factory a good base. Or strip to bare metal and use metal ecting primer. Or something different yet.

NO. That ecoat if it IS ecoat will make for a GREAT base for your paint. Ecoat is full of zinc and helps fight rust and prevents it from showing up. All you need is a just a scuffing and apply your primer, NO NEED TO REMOVE THAT COATING.

To test that coating you need to do what is called a solvent test. Take a rag and pour a solvent like lacquer thinner on the rag then wipe a spot on that coating. if the coating rubs off onto your rag, then you NEED TO REMOVE THAT COATING. Dont use this for your base, its NOT ecoat just a simple stocking or shipment coating I call it to prevent flash rusting.

True ecoat will NOT show up on your rag after a solvent test. If you wipe it and NO coating shows itself on the rag then all you need is a scuffing...Eric

Been planning a Big Earl's, Lumber Yard night of FUN :D for some time. Starting to have withdraws.

Des Moines at the fair grounds has a spring meet in early to mid May. Freemount, NE should be coming up pretty soon

You guys can do what you like, but I don't suggest painting over the so called e-coat.I used vari-prime over mine and it blistered the e-coat,I was told this from where I purchaced the panels that you could variprime over the e-coat,so I da'd down to bare metal and started over with the variprime to etch the panels, then euro primer, then sealer, then ppg 2 step, turned out great and I know I have adhesion,no guessing!Maybe if you go euro primer over e-coat it will work,I didn't try that so im not sure.

If you are going to use ANY type of etching primer, it must be over bare metal. (Hence the name etch). The solvent test will tell you if that is necessary, or not.
Second, I do not recomend mixing brands.
If you wnat to use PPG top coats, use their products from start, to finish. If you use Dupont primers, and PPGs top coats, who are you going to call when the paint job fails in a yr, or whatever? graemlins/clonk.gif The PPG rep will blame Dupont's primers, and Dupont rep will blame PPG's top coats. Stick with one brand, and pick a supplier in your area that provides good support!

Dave, what I would do is remove that ecoat on the damaged areas and apply some type of body filler.

Remove the ecoat with 80grit sandpaper, please dont whip out that 7in grinder with 24 grit and let her fly. Its causing unwanted damage to the metal. Body filler NO longer needs that 24-36 grit GOUGE in metal to adhere.

Recently I emailed Evercoat and they backed that statement up. I use nothing but 80grit on steel and 180 on aluminum.
