: Dropped a valve :(
big454blockchevy Mar 3rd, 06, 9:28 PM I did a wot throttle run and then head back to the house because the car was wanting to die on me. I go and check the plugs and they all look good but one. Cylinder #5 is not firing. I check the compression and there is none. Take off a valve cover and see the spring /with no pressure on it. The valve did not completely fall into cylinder but did smack the piston. I took the head off and the piston is showing a valve indentation . It surprised me it doesn't look worse. Although I know some oil mixed with the coolant , probably a cracked cylinder/block. It 's time I went the 496 route. I will not build this 496 , enough of me screwing up . The guy building the solid roller 496 offered to trade my small block for the big block. He put a value of $5500 on the 496 w/ stock valvesz(edit: 2.19 intakes) on 781 heads and will offer a discount for my small block.I don't want to get back to the track to find out my small block made more power than the new big block. My small block has got some good parts, dart pro 1's 215cc 64cc, J E pistons , 6.125 manely rods, scat scrank, and the hyd. roller valvetrain. Or maybe just replace the messed up piston and block on the small block? Ah , what a mess.
69 Ratt Vette Mar 3rd, 06, 10:11 PM Bummer, when you blow a motor up it is time for a bigger motor !!!!
ak69 Mar 3rd, 06, 11:56 PM Do you have oil in the radiator or coolant in the oil pan? Might not be as bad as you think...............What's he offering for the small block you currently have?
Bob West Mar 3rd, 06, 11:59 PM From a 12.3 to 11.00 or better, what decision is there to make? Come to the dark side Luke :D

Welcome to the world of racing, ok not enough of valve clearance and you bent a valve and broke a spring if block is cracked or leaking valve guide from water check it out and so i gather you have forged pistons in there as otherwise there would be no piston left, this is why you dont use Hyper**** pistons a new name for cast garbage they dont belong in a HP motor anything but make sure were the water is comming from at the worst a sleeve in that cylinder or welding job to the head and a new guide but you learned a typical lesson of why you have to make sure you check every cylinder for valve clearance a very hard lesson to learn but either way it can happen to any motor. what springs are you running and at what rpm did you bring it up to you may have floated the valve train in that cylinder depending on who set up the springs or broke a spring but dont get bent if you like the sbc stay with it and lesson learned ask more questions on this board before turning the key next time.

Yes , oil is in the radiator . Checked dipstick and no water contamination there. As far as the small block trade, he's offering 781 heads w/ 2.19 intake, 1.88 exh, the crank (4.25 stroke froms scat), rods ,pistons, balancer, flexplate, rpm manifold, headers, assembly and installation in car(but I can do that). He values the 496 at $5500 and needs to tear down my small block to figure out the damage and put a value on my messed up engine THEN I pay the difference. Looking at all the parts he's including it kind of looks like a decent deal. Also can anyone recommend a solid roller cam that will get me into the 11's N/A with 781's . My 3500 stall that I just bought flashed up to 4k with the 383 and am wondering if it would not be a good match for a big block's torque which is usually down very low .

I was the one that setup the springs :( . That's why my confidence is destroyed and I will not build it this time around. In a way I am still hoping I can just fix this assembly and fire it back up.

Yeah im thinking you could open up a catalog cover your eyes and point and that cam you point to should put you in the 11's with a 496 man, this wont be difficult.
JUNK YARD DOG Mar 4th, 06, 9:17 AM dont be so hard on yourself you may have done it all right but the valve could have seized in the guide.i have had this happen to me and several others.or a retainer could have broke or the keeper .the big block may be quicker but he is asking a pretty good price for it to .fix your motor then decide what you wont to do since you can do alot of the work yourself.to me a running engin is worth alot more to me as one scatterd on the floor.you have alot of good stuff in your motor now you may can fix it for less than 300 your self.good luck at what ever you dicide
Nickel333 Mar 4th, 06, 9:39 AM I had a valve seize in the guide and it was WAY worse that he described so maybe you got lucky man! Mine involved a smashed piston, a tore up combustion chamber and seat, completely bent rod, a junked crank and a cracked block. This was a fresh {250 miles} 4 bolt 350 with brand new sportsman II heads.....dammit!!!

I didn't answer your question on which springs and rpms. The springs are compcams 987's and I revved it to 6800rpms.

The 987's are SB springs with a 1.430" diameter. Comp doesn't list them at all for use on a BB. They're just too small, no matter what the pressure reads. The stock springs (G.M.) are 1.550's and Comp recommends 1.509's as a minimum. Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

I was referring to the springs that might have failed on the small block.Sorry for not being clear. I am looking into building the 496. I've got butterflies in my stomach just thinking about that big block. My heart starts pounding harder . Is this normal??? :D
big454blockchevy Mar 4th, 06, 9:08 PM Also me and the wifey were talking about this and "we" decided to go with the 496. I just told her how depressed I was that my engine had taken a puke and she gave in :D. I'm serious , I am going with the 496 :D. I am looking into a kit from speedomotive. The rotating assembly is at $1350 with balancing. Still have to talk to the guy building the engine and see what we can work out.
pdq67 Mar 4th, 06, 9:18 PM I have between $38 and $4,000 in my homemade "tow-truck" 496 motor AND I know I can build it some cheaper now!!
And I have NO problems with trusting myself to be able to put together a daily driver motor!!
BUT that said, I know my "tow-truck" 496 is NOT a race motor b/c I have limited myself by using rebuilt 3/8" truck rods.
And I have NO problem racing it up to my self-imposed rpm limit of about 6,000 rpm b/c of the 3/8" rods.
Heck, if I can beat on a $150 junk301 up above 7,000 rpm daily driving it, so what my cheap 496!!
I think you are beating yourself up over nothing like I do and have butterfly's in your gut before going ahead like I get.. I am MOST nervous just before I crank up my new motor!!!
BUILD your 496 motor yourself! I have faith in you! Just go slow..

Redrum Mar 5th, 06, 12:00 AM Do you intend to drop this BB into the 86 Z28? That won't be an easy fit....
big454blockchevy Mar 5th, 06, 1:46 PM Do you intend to drop this BB into the 86 Z28? That won't be an easy fit....
Yeah, it's going into my 86. I know I will have some new issues to deal with but It's been done enough times already that it's shouldn't be all that hard(knock on wood). What will bother me the most is the wiper motor having to me removed, I'm hoping I don't but we'll see.
