Umass May 7th, 03, 11:41 PM did you just buy this car why not look for a better car to start with. My dad just bought a 70 and after seeing how much rust it has and considering the time and money it would take to fix we are just gonna part it out the car has less floor rust than yours and we a ready have a 67 that needs a lot of work
Buzzbomb May 8th, 03, 12:31 AM Are you trying to eclipse the "Goodmark Chevelle" in terms of work and cost involved? They practically built that car from a kit it was so rusted out, and yours looks no different. The difference is, they got the parts for free and YOU have to pay for them. If that was my car, I'D REALLY take a LONG HARD look at the cost/work= FUN ratio. What is it with Chevelles rusting along the seam where the floor pan meets the body? Thats what makes your floor pans harder to fix. I'd bet the frame is rusted out somwhere too.
You have a neat car, but maybe you should just flog it till it drops. It's just too rusty, but, you post a lot of rust shots in the body forum here, and have probably heard this time and time again.
GOOD LUCK
red2rider May 8th, 03, 7:32 AM Oh my God. If the outside is as rough, you might reconsider on this car. If it was free, well who knows might be worth it. You are looking at a ton of work. Do you have fabricating skills?? I wouldn't take a car in this kind of shape and have to pay to get the work done. It'll cost a fortune.
Sorry to sound so harsh on your project. If it was a high end car in it's day then I'd find a shell for it, unless this is just something you have to tinker with. I'm almost finished with putting a whole 67 camaro together, completely replaced the entire rear section, 2 door skins, 1 floor pan, 2 fenders, and new hood, and you know the hardest part of it all is getting all the panels lined up again. It sure doesn't say much for the aftermarket panels out there. We almost replaced the damn roof on the car, but, he got the car for 100$ and has less than 2000$ in all the body parts.
Good luck

I first thought you had stolen my before pics of my first car but then I realized your car was not the forest green mine was. think of it as a labor of love(and money).
YenkoChevelle69 May 8th, 03, 3:21 PM Now that I have heard everything again that I have heard before.... How do I fix the edges? Like by the wheel tub, and by the kick panel. Thats all I want to know.
I have several 68-72 parts cars to cut parts cars from free of charge. I already have the floor replacement panels from goodmark.
As for know how, my grandpa is a welder by trade and has been for 35 yrs., I can get a mig at work for 150, I have several friends with the know how and I'll try anything once.
So, I have all the parts.....just gotta get em in there.

Shay Just keep an eye on my rear seat pan post. For the lips on the sides, you may have to fabricate some new lips by folding new sheetmetal and welding to whatever good metal you have. You need something on the side where the floor attaches to the inner quarter support. If the wheelhouse is rotted, you need to replace that also. I'm about to get into the phase where I weld in the rear pan shortly.

Shay Hmmmm. In your case, it sounds like you actually have a plan and a good set of circumstances that will give you an honest and CHEAP shot at fixing your car. At least you arent trying to "convince" everybody that the car will only be good enough with a full body rotisserie ground up no holds barred restoration tongue.gif
I'd bet you need to fabricate those lips, and weld on the floor pans from there. Is it possible to make patches for that area from the parts cars you have- or are you going to use the floors from them? That would be your best bet, as the sheetmetal and form just might fit with a little work. If the floors are good in the parts cars, why not make patch panels as far into the rocker as you need to go?

Just kidding, good luck...
feedphillipnow May 9th, 03, 12:17 AM  :D Yeah thats pretty bad. I had a 69' convert top blazer before my 71 chevelle and that thing was ruse on wheels! But if you enjoy driving it and have some bucks to throw around and good hook ups, just replace that sucker a panel at a time, theres always something worse out there!!!
19_Chevelle_69 May 9th, 03, 6:29 PM WOW! I just had a flash back to when I pulled the interior out of my 69. ;)
Mine was just like it, maybe even a little worse. I dropped in the new 2 piece floor pans, sized them for fit, then fabricated metal bits to fill in where the panels didn't cover.
Under the rear seat, I just fabbed panels out of sheet metal, because it was cheaper that buying new panels, and you don't see them once the seat is in anyway.
It really didn't take that long, just a bit of trial and error to get it all to fit together without leaving gaps.
A piece of advice...ALWAYS measure twice before you cut the metal, and ALWAYS test fit the peice before you weld it in. Chiseling out a mis-welded patch will distort your nice new panels.
Sounds like you've got a bunch of helpers to make it go a little easier. smile.gif
Good luck, it should work out fine.
Rumblin70SS May 11th, 03, 9:26 AM That's alot of work, but so was my car.......I bought every new panel they made, plus bought the back half of a donor car and separated out everything because I needed parts no one made. Put it all together with friends and family, plus some hired help. Cost alot of time, effort and money to do it right, but it is done right.
Would I do it again? You better believe it. There is no better feeling than fixing something that everyone said should have been junked!!
