I am replacing the gas tank on my 70 chevelle clone. on some ebay pictures i see cork under the 2 straps - on other pictures i dont. a car craft article showed the cork straps going between the top of the tank and the under side of the floor pan. anybody have a clue on this?

thanks - Jim Poks

I just took my tank off the 70 and there were cork between the tank and the straps; and there was cork between the gas tank and the body.

thanks - thats what i figured. i can understand between the tank and body and thats what the car craft article said. need a purist to set us straight. do you think it was original? Mine is original and there is no cork under the straps. Maybe just original SS? who knows?

any tips you care to share since you did yours already?

thanks for the reply

I've never seen cork. It looks like plain ole' roofin' felt to me.

On top is a tar based fabric..they call it anti sqeak paper..as for the straps I have seen both with and without insulation..usually a rubber based product if there at all..most did not have it on the ones I have seen..I usually dont put it between the straps and the tank.

I cut a very thin piece of 1/16 " thickness of black foam material, pick it up at the craft stores, cut it smaller then the width of the strap, glue to the strap only to the length of where it will contact the tank. no one will see it and it will keep the metal off the metal.

i got a piece of rubber roofing from a friend that owns a roofing company.
cut it to size and glued it to the straps.
