I have a 850hp 540 in a 1970 Chevelle and will be running 3.5 exhaust.I want something free flowing but not to loud to **** off my neighbors when I come rolling into the neighborhood at 1am in the morrning.

Use the largest Magnaflow muffler you can fit on the car. The larger the body, the quieter the sound. With the straight through design, you won't get much back pressure, thus good performance.

I agree with Rich. Also take a look at Borla.

I can't think of any 3.5" muffler that will not rumble the neighbors at 1am, especially behind 850hp. My sbc is around 650hp and I use the Magnaflow 3.5" with x-pipe and turn downs. Its reasonable quiet for what it is but I still try not to fire it up after 9pm. When I get home from the track late I roll it off the trailer and push it into the garage.

I like my Dynomax welded ovals, straight thru design. The more ponies, the more noise.

I don't care what you put on it, at 1 AM you're going to have some neighbors with wadded up panties. :D

I'm a Borla fan myself, and if you keep it at a dead idle it might work, but if you so much as sneeze on the throttle, or even wave your foot over the gas pedal, your going to be SO busted. :D

Wadded up panties are only good if she is a cutie!

Anyway, I just completed my 3.5" system with a Dr. Gas X and 14" long Magnaflows. I also have tailpipes, and inserted in the middle of the tailpipes are dynomax 3.5" bullets.

It rumbles for sure, but it's surprisingly quiet. But then it has 4 mufflers....

Same here!
The Dynomax are not outrageously loud but are not 1 AM friendly either.

I pulled my car out the other day with open headers and my neighborhood looked like the old west at high noon. Parents were running out into the street grabbing there kids and people were jumping up onto there porches.I was just idling wondering why everyone was running.I know there won't be any sneaking around with this car(I couldn't do it before when I had a LS-7 and 3inch exhaust)but I would like stop having pictures falling off the walls in my house when I run open headers.

I'm not sure if 850HP and quiet can be in the same sentence, but the suggestion for the largest case Magnaflow was a good one. Although my motor only makes enough HP to start yours, w/the 18" Mags I have the car is surprising quiet at idle. At WOT, women and childern will run. Whats more astounding is that this is a straight-through muff, how can it be this quiet? Magnaflows are packed w/stainless mesh vs. fiberglass - I would think the stainless mesh would last longer.

Gene (427L88) has the 22" case on his and he's a happy camper.

If you really want a loud obnoxious set up try spin tech pro shoot outs. Flowmaster hooter's cup ovals are a close second.

Another vote for Magnaflows.

I'm about 180 hp behind you, and I assure you that NOTHING will make your car 1:00am friendly in the neighborhood. Four mufflers will help, but at 3.5" there will still be some serious barking even at idle. A good X-pipe will help big time, and you should consider getting creative with a four muffler system if neighborhood peace is desired. For various reasons none of my neighbors want to call the police into my neighborhood - and I respectfully limit my late night exhaust rumble in exchange.

Do they make a "Silent Choice" setup like boats have for a car?

Route water from the radiator to your header tubes :D You'd need an awfully big storage tank ;)

I personally like the sound of Borlas and a "X" pipe will cut the noise level some.

Thanks for the help I ordered the Magnaflow stainless which were 20inch long 3.5's. The longest Borla was 17 inches long and was about 50 dollars more each.
