: Is this '72 worth it?

Hi everyone,

Got my eye on a '72 Chevelle (no pic's unfortunately). Here's the story:
*350, (runs) gear drive, small cam, turbo 350 trans, 4 wheel drum brakes.
*interior is so-so...door panels have a little wear/dirty, couple small tears; dash has one crack in the middle from the windshield back, rest of dash is fine, no tears, not cut up, no fading. Needs headliner, carpet could stand replacement, seats decent (seat covers will work fine).
*body-has a steel cowl hood (a little surface rust);needs fenders and quarters. Some surface rust in other areas but not rotted. Floor pans solid, frame solid, trunk pan intact/no holes but rusty. Glass intact, no cracks in any of it, but appears that windshield and back window might need to be resealed. No rot around windshield or back glass.
The guy is asking $2,000 for it. The thing about the car is that it is complete...all trim, moulding, etc...absolutely nothing is missing. Does this sound like a decent deal? I'm not looking for a complete resto project, just something to fix up into a nice cruiser/speed machine. I can replace the fenders myself, quarters will run about $1,000 bucks in labor. How much can I expect to spend in parts for decent quarters & fenders? The body is my main concern, the other stuff I can fix up a little at a time but still drive the car. What do ya think?

Thanks,
Darrell

For $2K..Hell yes. I paid $50 for my Chevelle and it wins car shows.

Sure sounds like it would be worth it. But I'd still offer him 15 benjamins for openers. :)

If the car is solid like your saying. Any Chevelle is worth 2k in my book.

Well the seller said he had a buyer that didn't really want to pay $2K for it but said he would take it, so I'm hoping he changes his mind...otherwise I might one-up him and offer the guy $2,100. The seller won't be back in town until Saturday so I have a few days before the one buyer is supposed to close the deal. I was originally going to offer him $1800, but when I called him back and asked if he still had the car that's when he told me about the one guy that said he would take it. I think I will call him and ask if the one buyer still wants it and take it from there. Thanks for the responses!

BTW,Who makes good straight fenders and quarters for a decent price?

Darrell,

Sounds like a pretty good deal. I agree with the other guy, any Chevelle is worth $2K. If you get this ride, I would expect to spend some bucks with new 1/4's and fenders. Best out there are made by Goodmark, but all require some massaging to get them to fit. You can expect to spend $5 - $8K more to get the car in really good shape.

Hope it works out for you.

"got another interested party" is an old sales line but if your inerested you better offer $2,500.00 pretty soon or you'll never stop kicking yourself for letting one get away.

You said the fella will take 2 grand.
As long as the frame is good its worth that easy.

I actually know for a fact another guy is interested. The seller dialed my number by mistake last Sunday (the day the ad ran in the paper) from his caller ID asking for the guy by name, when I told him he had the wrong number he said "oops, sorry" but I recognized his voice and that's when he said he was trying to call the guy back who was going to take it for $2,000. I'm going to try and get him on the phone tonight and offer $2,100 if he hasn't sealed the deal yet, but the seller is out of town until Saturday.

sounds like a steal to me. it's hard to find anything desent around here, so for a chevelle, I would jump on it.

Hope the other guy passes and you get yourself a new project.

Sounds like a well rehearsed version of the same old story.. I'll have to remember that one ;) ..

Car sounds good, even for 2100..

I would have stopped him and said he had the wrong number but I would gladly give him 2k for it too. Or up it to 2100 to seal the deal.

For a decent Chevelle at 2k. No sales tricks are necessary for a price like that now days. Buyers tricks is a different story just to get a deal like that. Now days if the price is right, its almost as if a seller just has to say show me the money.

Aw man, I didn't even think about that. CRAP, that would have been the thing to do.
Well I called the seller last night and offered him $2100, $2200 and then $2300! But he said he already promised it to the other guy and didn't want to go back on his word, so about my only hope at this point is the other changing his mind or not coming up with the $. The good thing, though, is even though I offered him $2300 he said if the other guy backs out he will let me have it for $2000...ya don't find many people like that anymore!
