: Final cam selection
rianbechtold Feb 28th, 06, 6:59 PM Ok, I'm finally purchasing the parts for my street 454. The compression will be around 9.5:1. I have narrowed it down to these cams, which would you choose and why? Or, if anyone has any first hand experience with them, can you please comment. Oh, and all part numbers are from Jegs. Thanks!
Lunati Voodoo 60204- 276* .564"
Lunati 00021 304*/324* .500"/.510"
Lunati 00024 292* .544"
Comp Cams Magnum 249-11-208-3 280* .520"
Comp Cams Magnum 249-11-213-3 292* .550"
Also, is there any other cam someone can suggest? I want a rough/lopey idle, yet stil streetable and i'd like to keep the rpm range low enough to use it as a street/strip car (i.e. a stall speed converter under 2400)
pdq67 Feb 28th, 06, 8:20 PM I'd install a good old CC 282S and be done with it!!
And to heck with a "sound"!!
In fact I did in my 496!!

rianbechtold Feb 28th, 06, 8:28 PM If i went with the CC 282s, what stall converter should i go with? Also, I do kinda care about sound since i have to listen to it everytime i drive it. Does it have a noticeable choppy idle? Thanks
Bob West Feb 28th, 06, 9:59 PM I think I'd have to try a VooDoo cam. Do you have air shocks on the back of your car or just small rear tires?
Budget Racer Feb 28th, 06, 11:31 PM The Voodoo looks good! The 292 comp hyd worked well in my friends 454-especially on 150 shot!

No, i have lift coils but they're coming out
UDHarold Mar 1st, 06, 12:37 AM With a 2400 SS converter, use the next size smaller VooDoo cam, the 60203. This one is 268/276 at the seat, 227/233 at .050, .542"/554" valve lift, and 110 LSA. It will have a nice lope, and be more comfortable with the 2400 SS converter. I like a 3000 SS converter with the 60204, and a little more CR, too.

SoCalRat Mar 1st, 06, 11:04 AM Brian,
I should have my 268 Voodoo installed this weekend if you want to hear it at idle. About 9.3 compression. Had the UD 280/288 before and it was a nice "sleeper idle" as Mr 4 speed put it.:D

I have a voodoo 268 to install also....I would love it if you would include an audio clip of it running.
30-A rider Mar 1st, 06, 5:06 PM Im no expert but I would think your gonna need some more tire on that ride once the big block goes in...unless of course you objective is to create smoke all day long.
rianbechtold Mar 1st, 06, 7:22 PM First of all, i'm getting new tires for sure. Also, does anyone have a soundclip of the 268? Thanks
SoCalRat Mar 1st, 06, 10:59 PM dreis454, I'll see what I can do for you.
rianbechtold Mar 1st, 06, 11:32 PM Oh, and i know it's kinda late but i also want it to be a hydraulic flat-tappet. Out of the cams listred, does anyone know which has the nastiest idle? Thanks again guys!
rianbechtold Mar 2nd, 06, 12:25 AM Hey guys, ok, after all those questions, i'm changing everything! This engine is being built on a REALLY tight budget and i just had to pay some things and now the budget is even tighter! I don't have enough money for an aftermarket torque converter!!! It isn't THAT big of a deal because in a year or so, i'm going to rebuild a th-400 trans i have so i'll install one then but until then i need a cam. So, i need a cam that can use the stock converter. I found that sounds pretty good and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it.
Comp Cams Dual Energy 275
275/283 at the seat 219/229 at .050" .507/.531" lift 110* LSA
They say it's a high performance cam, great high end power, choppy idle, works with stock converter.
I figure this should be a good cam considering it';ll only get better with an aftermarket stall when i can afford one. Thanks!

pdq67 Mar 2nd, 06, 10:40 PM I have ridden in a h-d 3/4 ton 4x4 P/U with a stock, low compression 454 that had a stock 400 and converter in it as well as a CC 280 Magnum. AND it was fine!
3.73's and 30" tall tires and all that crap too...
BB's make a alotta POWER!! EVEN low compressioned ones!!

Motorhead62 Mar 3rd, 06, 11:51 PM I like the Comp Cams Extreme Energy 274 (pn# 11-246-3) in a 454 big block. It specs out at 230/236 duration @ .050 and .552/.555 lift. This cam has a nice lope at idle and makes great power to 6000 RPM. It works very well in my Chevelle. It is very streetable, I drove it 1700 miles on the 2004 Hot Rod Power tour.
Good Luck

I had ran this cam with a stock converter and it had great off idle power to 5500 never went any higher.
