I have the bug to put a 5 spd in the 64 what would be a good donorn car to look for. mustang , camaro , s10? I dont have the funds to put a new tremec. I will be putting it behind 454 that is babied for the most part just an occasional kick in the gass. I am running a 700r4 behind it now

Really only the camaros will work, the s-10 is usually different, especially the 4wd transfer case, you will still need the clutch pedal and z-bar for a chevelle, as well as the brackets and linkages, and a larger 621 bellhousing to fit the 11" clutch and 168 tooth gear.

Since its a 454 I would just wait till you have the funds to go with a muncie or a tremec, because a t-5 won't even hold up to a couple runs round town with more than 300 hp. Even the World Class T-5's are weak.

No matter how you do it its not going to be either easy or cheap. The best "cheap" way to go is to find a LT1 T-56 complete with the bellhousing, clutch pressure plate and cluth pedal, slave cylinder and master cylinder and bolt it all in with a little modification. It would only cost a little more than a t-5 swap, and they're easier to find around me also.

IMO, the Cheapest route (at least that will hold up to the power of the 454) would likely be a used Doug Nash/Richmond 5-speed... It will easily handle the power, and is usually a pretty easy swap from stock (of course, you already have the 700R4)... These have been around for years, so you should be able to pick one up, with a shifter for a resonable price... I got mine a few years ago with a new $400+ shifter for $1600 (included shipping) from a reputable trans company (buying from an individual and/or a used shifter could save alot of money).

Can use all the "standard" Chevelle 4-speed stuff (like linkage, bellhousing, clutch, etc). Shifter comes through the floor is approximately the right spot...

Its not an "overdrive", so its probably better if you don't have lower gears already. (at least for cruising the highway).
