does anyone know where I can get a gasket for the back plate/cover for a big block water pump for a 1970 396? I tried to make a couple but I cant find the right material and I keep getting a leak? thanks, Marty

sounds like that would be an over the counter item at a parts store, try a Napa parts store, auto zone, kragen

Sometimes waterpumps and thermostat housings will get a burr on the edge of them, usually from being dropped or banged around.
It will put a dent and raised spot on the edge.

Clean the mating surface real good, I use just a little bit of lacquer thinner.

Lets say the width is eight inches, just guessing here.

Get a flat file, a ten or twelve inch would work good. Lay the file flat on the surface, then with just light pressure move the file back and forth, just a couple inches back and forth, you want to keep from rounding the edges over, light pressure, you will see a shiny spot or two on the edge of the pump, also do the block to.

The file needs to stay flat with the surface, light pressure.

Hope this might help you out.

well, since any decent engine gasket kit always comes with that gasket, i'd say that NAPA should carry it.
well, probably ANY of the chain stores should have it, but from my experience with the kidz working at the average Checker or AutoZone or whatever, it might be a bit aggravating to find it anywhere but NAPA.

i did find this at the partsamerica website- it is a Fel PRo part
