I have hung new quarters, doors, and fenders...all Dynacorn....on the 71. I am very happy with my trunk gaps, and the fender to door gaps, but I have a little work to do on the door to quarter gaps. The gaps are just right at the bottom, and as you work your way up they maintain a nice margin up to the body line. From the body line to the top of the door, the gap widens a bit. Anyway, I would really like to make this area perfect before I paint it. What do you recommend for evening this gap? I have seen the guys on American Hot Rod use filler to add to a gap, and I have heard of guys welding a piece of metal to the quarter. Thoughts?

If it was mine I would add some additional material using a mig welder to the edge of the door like I had to do on my 74 Nova door below.

On mine just the top portion of the gap was unacceptable so I sanded off the primer in that area on the front and the back and then took a brass block and held it tight onto the backside edge of the door and then added some weld to the edge of the door. The brass block backup helped with the welding and does not stick to the weld but it does get hot so use gloves. I welded using little bursts as to not to overheat the area AND put on more weld than I needed. I then came back with my grinder and cutoff wheel and fitted it so I had an even gap. I also tapped the edge up or down with a body hammer so there will be no filler needed on the very edge and probably not much on that area total.

If you weld metal, and it chips after its painted, you can touch it up, but with filler, you could have a chunk out of it.

Getting all the gaps on the panels on the money, thats something you rarely see, well worth the time and effort to do it.

Thanks for the input guys, I am pretty handy with my MIG, so I will find a piece of brass and try that method....

Never bother with putting filler on an edge like that! That's just stupid.... it will crack and fall off as soon as you accidentally shut a seat belt in the door or pull on the edge of the door funny.... Add some weld, maybe a bead along the quarter and then blend that back in the door jamb if possible would help keep from warping the door? Either way, just go slow and keep the heat down.
