: Retro Chevelle
2sixtyeights Feb 24th, 06, 8:17 AM The auto show comes to Cleveland today. With all the excitement generated with the release of the prototype Camaro in Detroit, would you buy (money not being an issue) a retro Chevelle at some future date that it happens? (Just think-a Chevelle inspired body on a Corvette frame/suspension/drivetrain.)
Secondly-What year Chevelle body style should it be modeled after? Think of the possibilities.
Bowtieguys Feb 24th, 06, 8:38 AM Do you mean like this?

2sixtyeights Feb 24th, 06, 8:46 AM Yes. Can I get this at my local dealer?;)
Bowtieguys Feb 24th, 06, 9:16 AM Unfortunately no. This car was made based off of a new GTO by a company as a one off. I believe Steve Sandlin owns the car out of Las Vegas.
69boo307 Feb 24th, 06, 9:31 AM that thing's butt ugly
jtm60 Feb 24th, 06, 9:51 AM I wouldnt want that red POS if you gave it to me! WOOF!!!!
2sixtyeights Feb 24th, 06, 9:58 AM OK guys-This is just one idea. What would like to see as the the new retro Chevelle?
Bowtieguys Feb 24th, 06, 10:12 AM I'm with you guys. I just posted the pics....thats all. There are a lot of styling changes that would need to be made to even make it decent.
Bowtie4Life Feb 24th, 06, 10:42 AM I know it is sacriligious to say this, but how I wish GM would follow Chrysler's lead and create a new Chevelle that incorporates the stylings of its forefathers....like Dodge is doing with the Challenger. For those that are unaware, it looks like this:
http://autoblog.it/uploads/dodge_challenger_03.jpg
http://www.wheels24.co.za/Images/Photos/20060109091522Challenger-400.jpg
Build a Chevelle along these lines, and GM won't be bitching about record low sales...
....but knowing GM, they will go ahead with that POS that is posted above. Just look what they did to the GTO.
2sixtyeights Feb 24th, 06, 10:54 AM Thats what I'm getting at. Chrysler did a great job with the Challenger. Probably better than GM did with the Camaro. What styling elements do you want to see and what year Chevelle should it be styled after?
Bowtie4Life Feb 24th, 06, 11:00 AM Well I think they should start with a 1968. I know this guy who has two of them....I am pretty sure he keeps one at his office in the garage out in the back. Those cars had lines, curves and chrome...not a bad beginning for the rebirth of a classic.
Motorhead62 Feb 24th, 06, 11:06 AM I would buy one. The wife and I are thinking of a new car purchase. However, FAT chance GM will ever wake up, come to thier senses and see that retro muscles cars are hot right now. The Camaro might happen, but the current concept version is lame, IMO. Ford and Chrysler have that market firmly in hand. We are considering a Challenger if they build one, they are sweet!
Bowtie4Life Feb 24th, 06, 11:34 AM Well, I think GM is trying...but they are missing their target. They have built a retro looking truck that is reminiscent of the PT Cruiser, but it's that "been there, done that" kind of thinking that seems to fuel GM lately. Its like they sit in their corner watching the rest of the automotive industry and then exploit someone elses good idea. Ford went retro with the T-bird after pulling it off the market for a few years...had moderate success, but hit the mark when the went retro with the Mustang. GM is now going retro with the Camaro after pulling it off the market for a few years....and damn if that redesign doesn't incorporate the same kind of lines used on the reworking of the 'stang. I am ever so hopeful that GM builds the Camaro, as my first Chevy's were 1984 and 1989 Camaros. I loved those cars and would love to see the Camaro name on the road again....but it still serves the example that GM is following the pack instead of leading it like it did back in the day.
(One thing I AM excited about is the 2006 Monte Carlo SS...the first RWD Monte Carlo in 20 years...and it comes with a V8. At least GM has grown a little pair by trying something outside the box....)
jtm60 Feb 24th, 06, 11:38 AM Real seating for 4 or 5; bigger inch smallblock, dont just throw in the 5.3L and call it a day. ability to get it with a manual trans. Id be happy with new GTO like drivetrain I guess, as long as it looks nothing like that pig.
Hire a couple designers from Dodge, take styling cues from 69 and 70, but dont make it a total 100% retro car, as I think that will get tired going forward, although in the first couple of years it would be a smash if done correctly.
dont be afraid to stripe it and make it look aggressive..the solid color thing needs something tasteful to break it up. basically they need to grow a set, and start doing what chrysler is doing!
Keith Tedford Feb 24th, 06, 11:54 AM With a decent sized back seat and trunk, I think that a retro Chevelle would cater to a much greater market than a Camaro. A reskinned Monte Carlo with a rear drive setup would do the job so that they wouldn't have to develop a whole new car. GM already has enough V6 and V8 engines to cover the market. They could even build a COPO Chevelle with the Corvette 505 hp 427. Don't know why I like that idea so much? There really isn't anything retro about the new Camaro and it seems to miss the mark and the intended market.
Derek69SS Feb 24th, 06, 12:21 PM OK guys-This is just one idea. What would like to see as the the new retro Chevelle?100% modern styling - retro sucks.
I have an old chevelle, I want a new one. If the new one looks like the old one, what's the point?

If it doesn't look like a chevelle, why call it one? That would just be a shame.
Derek69SS Feb 24th, 06, 7:26 PM what does "a chevelle" look like?
They changed dramatically from '64-76, so which year "looks like a chevelle" and what exactly do the other 12 years look like, if they don't "look like a chevelle"
I want a car that does what the chevelle did in those years... mid-size, 2-door coupe, V8, RWD, comfortably seats 4 adults, has a usefull trunk, and performs well. If it does all that, and is built by GM (chevrolet specifically), then it's earned its right to be called a chevelle.
Did a '70 Chevelle look like a '64? NO, so why should a 2009 look like a '70???
joeyv69ragtop Feb 25th, 06, 3:24 AM what does "a chevelle" look like?

So it's hard to pinpoint what "a chevelle" looks like, but what I'm trying to say is that a new chevelle should resemble old styling enough that when people see it they know it is a chevelle. The Challenger is an excellent example of that. The chevelle concept in this post and the concept camaro? not so much. I think they both leave something to desire.
Derek69SS Feb 25th, 06, 10:30 AM The Challenger is an excellent example of that. The challenger only ever had one style, so it's easy to pick a style for a new "retro" one. The Chevelle never looked the same from one year to the next.

This is true, same with the GTO ;) With the new GTO design, I guess most don't have a good evolutionary invisioning imagination :)
The new Camaro is in the same boat, but with current popularity the 69 is a logical choice to design off of. I think the current Camaro concept needs a little tweaking in the front and rear to be a home run but overall it's an attractive design. If memory serves me right the Challenger did not change it's design from I think 70-74 so DMC's design is right on the money if that's what they are after. But you think, how many people will actually buy one? Taking a look at the new Mustang (good looking car BTW) the market is hot for that product so I say it will sell quite well overall, even to rental car companies. If not, it will bring buyers into Chrysler showrooms anyway.
New Chevelle? Well, thinking back the Chevelle was a 2 door performance car, a 4 door granny grocery getter, and a station wagon people hauler so do we want that lineup brought back or just the 2 door performance lineup? If a 2 door, make it a 66-67 or a 70 retro design.
Derek69SS Feb 25th, 06, 9:27 PM New Chevelle? Well, thinking back the Chevelle was a 2 door performance car, a 4 door granny grocery getter, and a station wagon people hauler so do we want that lineup brought back?Yes, Please! You guys can have your 2-doors, I want a new V8 RWD wagon! :D
Chirp08 Feb 25th, 06, 11:54 PM the new monte is still FWD Bowtie4Life, they couldn't even get that right...
Bowtie4Life Feb 28th, 06, 12:04 AM Let me say this...I was at the Cleveland Auto Show last friday. I went as a skeptic regarding the retro-reworking of cars like the Challenger and the Camaro, but after seeing what Chevrolet has in mind for the Camaro, I am a believer. That car brings a whole new meaning to "BAD ASS BOWTIE". Every line is aggressive and every curve seductive on that car. IT IS AWESOME....and for anyone that has doubts, go see it for yourself and let GM know that this one needs to be built. Who knows, maybe this will open the floodgates at GM for more retro projects...such as the re-birth of the Chevelle. All I know is that GM has the car to beat if they decide to build it...what an awesome ride....
Bowtie4Life Feb 28th, 06, 12:07 AM Chirp08, I hear you. I saw that at the Auto Show and was totally disappointed. I had actually considered buying one until I discovered that insult to horsepower. Who the hell puts a V-8 in a FWD car and calls it an SS? More like BS. Being a diehard NASCAR fan, I thought it would be cool to get a Monte Carlo with the V8, but I don't want to go down the road smokin' the fronts while I pull up against cars like the Charger which will, I am sad to say, smoke the SS Monte all day long.
Bowtie4Life Feb 28th, 06, 12:11 AM BTW...Chevy is releasing a special edition HIGH END Corvette in 2007-2008. The project name for this car is called "Blue Devil" and the rumor is a "BALLS TO THE WALL" Corvette that will rival anything on the market...but dig deep Corvette enthusiasts, its rumored that this Blue Devil will be more than $100,000.00. However, if anyone at GM is reading this, I will gladly be your guinea pig and drive this one for you to see how it handles.
