I shot some cortez silver and clear on some misc pieces last weekend and got some minor runs in the basecoat and clearcoat. When I did my firewall (a month ago when it was warmer), I got none.
The temp was about 50 deg in the garage last weekend. Is it possible that the temperature made the difference or is just that I cannot verify coverage easily as I am spraying silver over light grey and it is hard to see how much paint I am actually laying on at a given moment. I will be painting my hood in a few weeks and do not want to see any obvious mistakes as I saw on these less significant pieces. Any tips would be appreciated. I am thinking about spraying a very light dusting of a dark primer as a guide for coverage. Should I plan on 3 coats instead of 2 and make a point of laying it on lighter? What are your thoughts on this ?

The colder weather makes the paint dry a lot slower, lighter coats maybe 3-4.Try and get some HEAT!!! 60 is about as low as you should go.Can also get different temp reducers and hardener.

You need to look at the paint wetness as you're applying it, have alot of light available and track the light's reflection in your gun pattern while you move. 50 degrees is very cold and would have required very very light coats with alot of flash time between. warm up the garage? it doesn't take much to bump it up 10-20 degrees. I would definately apply three coats of base, two for coverage and one to even the metalics. Are you panel painting this car? I'd never panel paint a high metalic color unless it was all done at the same time and the panels were mounted in a position similar to how they are on the car. Good luck, crank the heat up. graemlins/beers.gif

I'll update the site tomorrow night probably. I'm glad you guys like to track my progress.
I will be sure not to paint till the garage is at least 70 degrees. Hey, this is a learning experience, right ? Like I've said before, this car will NOT be perfect, but I am doing 95% of it myself, learning a bunch while doing it and having a blast. I'll also save thousands of dollars in labor graemlins/thumbsup.gif Like Martinsr said "Shoot some paint on it and have a good time" and that is exactly what I plan to do.
I will be painting the outside of the car later and all at the same time when the garage temp is ideal, probably 75-80 deg. I have been painting some underhood items and misc pieces for practice up to this point. I did go a bit heavy with only 2 coats in cool weather the other day and am sure that must have been the cause for the runs. Thanks for the verification. When I get a warm afternoon in the near future, I will shoot the underside of the hood with 3 or 4 light coats and 3 coats of clear, then we can see how that comes out. I still have to wet sand the SW urethane primer before shooting. That will look awesome
Yes, I do work on the car alot because it is really the only time I can make myself relax and get away for awhile from the 7-5 and single parent routine. ;) My 11 year old daughter is great and understands this :D
Thanks again y'all
