I'm attempting to weld my quarter panels on my Impala, finally.

Any tips for me? I've rented a 110v Lincoln Mig from the rental store, and I'm going to do it this Saturday. They don't have any gas-fed welders, only flux core.

I've welded this and that before, but really haven't had any luck welding light sheetmetal.

Anything I should keep in mind besides the correct setting, good clean ground, good clean welding surface, go slow to avoid warpage...?

It's going to be a lap joint all the way around, so it should be a little easier than the butt joints I've always had to do.

Thanks for any input!

A few things come to mind..before restriking a new arc cut off the little ball on the end of the wire makes for a cleaner weld and less heat put into the panel while welding. Also I prefer not to use a damp rag or blow compressed air on weld to cool it down. Let the weld cool down on its own, more times then not the cool water or the air will shock the metal leaving it work hardend. Also when using flux wire grind the weld alittle before connecting it to other welds. This gets rid of the flux that is left behind in the welding process, which when left in the weld can make it bittle and weak.

Use a stich weld process. Weld only about 1/2 to 1 inch at a time then move on to a different part of the pannel. This prevents getting the panel too hot in any one particular spot which should help prevent warping.
I like to keep a wet rag in the area of the weld to keep the heat from spreading to far.
Make up a couple of test pieces to weld on so you can become familiar with the welder and get your settings right.
Practice makes perfect. Get the weld hot enough to make a good weld without burning through. If the weld is not hot enough it will be weak and porus, not good either.

Good Luck
