I have a 65 SS and on the front grille I have noticed that there are remnats of black paint on different parts of it. Can anyone telle me what parts of this grille are supposed to be "blacked out"? Is it just the verticle recessed bars or is it everything except the top, bottom and center horizontal bars? What type of paint is best to use in this application? Thanks

The very bottom and very top and the middle bars are the only bars not blacked out. The best way of painting grills I believe is using single stage urethane paint like from ppg. Then you can add flatter to the paint to get the proper gloss. I would wet sand the grill bars to be painted with 600 wet dry paper, just enough to rough up the surface to get the paint to stick. Mask off the remaining grill, around the edges where the paint meets the unpainted part of the grill use a fine line tape which makes for a cleaner line then regular masking tape. Right after you are done painting wait about 15 minutes and remove the fine line tape.
Good luck with your project...Eric

Actually the top most bar on the grille is painted black. The second down or first thin bar which lines up with the top bar of the headlight bezel does not get painted. Sevt_chevelle is right about the middle and bottom bars.
