69 Chevelle 307. I have a 12ga. red wire that connects to the drivers side of the carb. It is hooked to something cylinder shaped, aprox 2 in long with a plunger on it. The plunger has a bolt head. #1What is this thing? I have installed a new engine 383 with Edelbrock carb-elec choke. #2Can I use this wire for my elec choke? #3Does the elec choke need a ground? There is two spots on it for connectors + and -. Thanks for your help as always. Brian

I believe that's the idle stop solenoid to speed up the engine a little when the A/C is turned on.
Does it have power when the key is on?

I believe Dean is correct, this is an idle stop solenoid wire. If you have 12V when the engine is running, then you can use this for the electric choke. You'll need to run a ground wire from the "-" on then choke dial, connecting this wire to a bolt on the engine should be fine.

Thats a throttle kicker. Whenever the ac compressor is engaged it raises the idle rpm to compensate for it. You CANT run your choke off that wire. You will need to run the + choke wire to your fuse box to a fuse that is only hot when the key is in the run position. The - just goes to a ground. Some guys just run a ground wire to one of the carb studs. Good luck.

Sounds like it's NOT hot unless the A/C is on ??

I think John said there is a hot wire (when key is in the "run" position ) on the wiper motor that can be used.

This solonoid is not on the new Edelbrock carb, will my engine now bog way down when using my a/c? Can I just cut this wire, tape it off and tuck it away it in the loom with the rest of the wires? The front clip is off the car now and I am just piecing things back together a little each evening and run into a snag almost every night. This is my first time at all this. Thanks for all your help!!

Your 69 would have came from the factory with a 12 gauge pink wire attached to an idle stop solenoid. The intended function is to set normal idle speed when the solenoid is powered. It gets power when the ignition switch is "ON". When the engine is shut off the solenoid allows the throttle plate to close further to help kill the engine. run-on or dieseling was a problem back then. The use of a fast idle solenoid tied to the A/C system was not used on 64-72 Chevelles.

Your car may very well have a red wire that is attached to the A/C system and used for a fast idle solenoid, wiring mods are common. Check for power on the wire when the ignition is ON and for no power when the ignition is OFF. If power when on, witch the A/C on/off to verify no tie. If you pass both tests then use the wire for the electric choke.

If the wire is not hot with the ignition on then check the two leads to the wiper motor. One is hot. You can tie your choke into this one. You will then need to attach the solenoid to the new carb so your ac doesn't bog down your engine. Hope this helps.
