I recently finished painting my 70 and while color sanding I broke through the clear in two places. Since I am color sanding anyway, can I just shoot the small area with clear and colorsand to blend with the rest of the panel, or do I need to re-shoot the entire panel? Also- where one mistake is, the clear is sanded to a 2000 grit, the other has been sanded to a 2000 grit and then buffed. What do I use to scuff the clear to apply another coat? (what grit sandpaper or do I just use a scuff pad?) Thanks in advance for any advice!

Nick, you need to sand the whole panel with 1000, or you can use a gray scuff pad with Prep and Blend(3M) or Scuff Stuff. Then spray color over your sand thru and reclear the whole panel. If you just spray clear over the sand thru it will look like a shiny sand thru. smile.gif

70isfine-
Thanks for the reply- I didn't mean that I would just spray clear over where I sanded through, but I would sand out a spot, spray color and then clear over a slightly larger area. Then I would go back and colorsand that area (rather than having to do the entire panel) I am not trying to wind up with a cheater paint job here, but if I can avoid re-clearing the whole panel and then re-colorsanding the whole panel that would make my day.

Not clearing the whole panel is cheating,it is hard to hide the clear blend,it can be done but will show and possibly peel back over time. This is assuming you are using urethane, not laquer.

Got it- thanks for the help. 1 last question- since I will have to take that area down a little to fix the base coat- should I lay a couple coats of clear over just that area and then finish with one coat that covers the entire panel, or should every coat of clear cover the entire panel?

I would just put two nice coats over the whole panel. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

If this is a solid color rather than a metalic or pearl you will not have to recolor the panel, simply reclear it and it will be fine.
